No. 4 Indiana returns to Bloomington Saturday afternoon for an important Big Ten matchup against a Minnesota team that enters with confidence after upsetting No. 15 Iowa.
Indiana improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten play with a dramatic 13-6 overtime victory at Michigan. The Hoosiers managed only 212 total yards but leaned on an outstanding defense that held Michigan to 57 rushing yards, forced two turnovers and recorded four sacks. Josh Hoover completed 8 of 18 passes for 81 yards before scoring the winning four-yard touchdown in overtime.
That victory was significant beyond the standings. It was Indiana’s first win at Michigan since 1967 and demonstrated that Curt Cignetti’s team can win even when its offense struggles.
Minnesota arrives after its own defensive battle.
The Golden Gophers defeated No. 15 Iowa 13-10 when Luke Drzewiecki drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired. Minnesota produced only 209 total yards and converted just two of 14 third downs, but its defense forced four Iowa turnovers and kept the game close enough for a late winning drive.
That makes Saturday’s matchup especially interesting.
Indiana has been one of the nation’s strongest defensive teams. The Hoosiers allow just 12.0 points per game, have surrendered only five passing touchdowns through eight games and have recorded 28 sacks. Opponents are converting only 32.5 percent of their third downs.
Minnesota’s offense has been inconsistent. Quarterback Drake Lindsey has thrown for more than 1,300 yards, but against Iowa he completed 14 of 26 passes for only 137 yards with an interception. Minnesota’s rushing attack was also held to 72 yards.
Indiana’s challenge is on the other side of the ball.
The Hoosiers average 33.6 points per game, but they have scored only 48 combined points over their last three games against Nebraska, Ohio State and Michigan. Hoover has thrown for 1,741 yards, 18 touchdowns and only one interception this season, but his 81-yard performance against Michigan was easily his least productive passing game of the year.
Minnesota’s defense gives the Golden Gophers a chance to keep this closer than the spread suggests.
Josh Hoover — Indiana: Has thrown 18 touchdowns against only one interception. Indiana needs him to rediscover the efficiency he showed earlier in the season after struggling at Michigan.
Turbo Richard — Indiana: Leads the Hoosiers with 643 rushing yards and produced 68 yards on 19 carries against Michigan.
Charlie Becker — Indiana: Leads Indiana with 694 receiving yards and remains Hoover’s primary downfield target.
Drake Lindsey — Minnesota: The Golden Gophers’ quarterback has thrown for 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns in his first six listed starts, but now faces Indiana’s aggressive pass rush.
Darius Taylor — Minnesota: Experienced back who scored Minnesota’s only touchdown against Iowa, although he was limited to 20 rushing yards.
Javon Tracy — Minnesota: Minnesota’s leading receiver entering the week and caught seven passes for 45 yards against Iowa.
Minnesota must avoid obvious passing situations.
Indiana has 28 sacks through eight games, and allowing the Hoosiers to attack Lindsey on third-and-long could quickly end drives.
The Golden Gophers also need to shorten the game. Long possessions, a controlled tempo and field-position football would reduce Indiana’s number of offensive opportunities.
Finally, Minnesota must continue creating takeaways. Four Iowa turnovers were a major reason the Gophers won despite generating only 209 yards.
Indiana needs a stronger offensive start.
The Hoosiers have scored only one offensive touchdown in each of their last two games against Ohio State and Michigan. Hoover, Richard and Becker need to generate more explosive plays.
Defensively, Indiana must make Minnesota one-dimensional. The Hoosiers held Michigan to 1.4 yards per rushing attempt, and similar success would place enormous pressure on Lindsey.
Player-prop availability varies by sportsbook. The numbers below are recommended target lines if similar markets are offered.
Indiana relied heavily on Richard against Michigan, giving him 19 carries.
With the Hoosiers favored by nearly three touchdowns, the game script should produce another substantial workload.
Prediction: Over 69.5 rushing yards.
Lindsey managed only 137 yards against Iowa.
Indiana allows just 191.5 passing yards per game and has permitted only five passing touchdowns all season.
Prediction: Under 199.5 passing yards.
Becker was held to 32 yards at Michigan but still leads Indiana’s receiving corps.
Expect Cignetti to look for more explosive throws at home after last week’s conservative offensive performance.
Prediction: Over 59.5 receiving yards.
Indiana may not need Hoover to throw 30-plus times if its defense controls the game.
With a 42.5-point total and Indiana favored by 19.5, a run-heavy second half is realistic.
Prediction: Under 225.5 passing yards.
The spread has already moved significantly.
Indiana opened around -22.5, but the market has dropped to -19.5. The total also moved from approximately 45.5 to 42.5, reflecting expectations for a defensive game.
Minnesota is capable of making this ugly. The Golden Gophers have already beaten Michigan and Iowa this season and should not be intimidated by another ranked Big Ten opponent.
Indiana 27, Minnesota 10
Minnesota +19.5 Under 42.5 Turbo Richard Over 69.5 Rushing Yards Drake Lindsey Under 199.5 Passing Yards
Indiana should win, but laying nearly 20 points against a Minnesota defense that just shut down Iowa is difficult.
The Hoosiers have the superior defense, home-field advantage and more explosive offensive personnel, but their offense has also slowed significantly against stronger Big Ten competition.
Expect Indiana’s defense to control Lindsey and the Minnesota rushing attack while Richard gradually wears down the Gophers.
Minnesota should do enough defensively to avoid a blowout, but sustaining scoring drives against Indiana will be extremely difficult.
Prediction: Indiana 27, Minnesota 10.
Indiana opened around -22.5 before moving to -19.5, while the total dropped from approximately 45.5 to 42.5. Confirm the final spread, injury status and player props before wagering.
