Conference USA takes center stage Tuesday night when Delaware travels to Bowling Green for a critical matchup against Western Kentucky.
Both teams enter 3-4 overall, but WKU holds an important advantage in the conference race at 2-1. The Hilltoppers have also won two straight, beating Missouri State 34-13 before shutting down Sam Houston 16-3. WKU is 2-0 at home this season and 31-12 at Houchens-Smith Stadium under Tyson Helton.
Delaware arrives with momentum of its own after exploding for a 61-38 victory over Missouri State.
Quarterback Nick Minicucci returned after missing two games and immediately transformed the offense, completing 20 of 29 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. The Blue Hens scored on nine consecutive drives and did not punt.
Minicucci has thrown for 1,063 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions in five games. Delaware averages 268 passing yards and 28.3 points per game, giving the Blue Hens an offensive ceiling WKU has not consistently matched.
Western Kentucky has taken a different path lately.
The Hilltoppers have leaned increasingly on defense and the running game. Against Sam Houston, WKU held the Bearkats to 177 total yards and three points, while quarterback Brock Glenn threw for 127 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a team-high 54 yards.
That creates the game’s defining matchup.
Delaware owns one of CUSA’s better passing attacks, but its defense ranks last in the conference against the pass at 270.3 yards allowed per game. WKU, meanwhile, allows only 190.9 passing yards per game but has been vulnerable on the ground, surrendering 184.1 rushing yards per contest.
Whichever team attacks the opponent’s weakness more effectively should have the advantage.
Nick Minicucci — Delaware: The veteran quarterback returned with six total touchdowns against Missouri State and gives Delaware its most dangerous offensive weapon.
Jo’Nathan Silver — Delaware: Rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown last week while also catching a touchdown. He has 331 rushing yards this season.
Sean Wilson — Delaware: Leads the Blue Hens with 31 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns and caught six passes for 69 yards against Missouri State.
Brock Glenn — Western Kentucky: His dual-threat ability has added a new dimension to the WKU offense. He has topped 50 rushing yards in four games this season.
Ajay Allen — Western Kentucky: Leads the Hilltoppers with 346 rushing yards and four touchdowns and should have opportunities against a Delaware defense that must respect Glenn’s mobility.
Jonathan Stafford Jr. — Western Kentucky: The true freshman leads WKU with 41 receptions for 369 yards and has already earned three CUSA Freshman of the Week honors.
Delaware needs Minicucci to stay aggressive without becoming careless. Western Kentucky’s defense has intercepted passes in three consecutive games, so turnovers could quickly swing a game with such a small spread.
The Blue Hens also need to establish Silver. WKU’s biggest defensive weakness statistically has been stopping the run, and a balanced offense would prevent the Hilltoppers from concentrating entirely on Minicucci.
Defensively, Delaware must contain Glenn when plays break down. His rushing ability has become an important part of WKU’s offense.
The Hilltoppers need to make Minicucci uncomfortable.
Allowing Delaware to recreate last week’s offensive rhythm would put considerable pressure on a WKU offense averaging just 21.3 points per game.
Offensively, WKU should attack Delaware’s vulnerable secondary while continuing to use Glenn and Allen on the ground.
The Hilltoppers must also protect the football. WKU has gone consecutive games without committing a turnover, while Delaware forced three takeaways against Missouri State.
Player prop availability varies by sportsbook. The lines below are recommended target numbers if your book offers similar markets.
Minicucci averages 212.6 passing yards per appearance and threw for 225 in his return against Missouri State.
WKU’s pass defense is respectable, but Delaware’s offense is built around throwing the football.
Prediction: Over 199.5 passing yards.
Glenn rushed 22 times for 54 yards against Sam Houston and has recorded at least 50 rushing yards four times this season.
His mobility becomes especially valuable in a close conference game.
Prediction: Over 39.5 rushing yards.
Allen leads WKU with 346 yards on 82 carries.
With the Hilltoppers at home and trying to keep Delaware’s offense off the field, expect Allen to receive a steady workload.
Prediction: Over 49.5 rushing yards.
Wilson leads Delaware in receiving and produced 69 yards on six catches last week.
With Minicucci back under center, Wilson’s target opportunities should remain strong.
Prediction: Over 49.5 receiving yards.
This is one of the most evenly matched CUSA games of the week.
Delaware owns the more explosive passing offense, but WKU has the stronger recent defensive form, home-field advantage and a 2-0 record in Bowling Green.
The Hilltoppers have allowed only 16 combined points during their two-game winning streak, while Delaware’s defense surrendered 38 last week despite the victory.
Western Kentucky 28, Delaware 27
Western Kentucky -1.5 Under 56.5 Brock Glenn Over 39.5 Rushing Yards Sean Wilson Over 49.5 Receiving Yards
Delaware should be dangerous with Minicucci healthy, and this game could remain undecided into the fourth quarter. But Western Kentucky’s improving defense, home-field advantage and ability to control possession provide a narrow edge.
Expect Minicucci to make plays through the air and Delaware to score considerably more than Sam Houston did, but WKU’s balanced rushing attack and late defensive stop could determine the outcome.
Prediction: Western Kentucky 28, Delaware 27.
The betting market has been unusually fluid. While your supplied line has Western Kentucky -1.5 with a 56.5 total, some books have moved toward Delaware -1 or -1.5 and totals around 55.5–56.5. Confirm the final spread, injuries and player props before wagering.
