Western Kentucky is only a 1.5-point road favorite, setting up a matchup that could have significant implications for both teams as they try to gain traction in the CUSA standings.

Western Kentucky owns a 3-1 advantage in the last four meetings, including a 41-24 victory over Sam Houston last season.
Western Kentucky may have found an offensive formula that fits its personnel.
Quarterback Brock Glenn accounted for 326 total yards in the 34-13 victory over Missouri State. He completed 20 of 35 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown while adding 95 rushing yards and another score.
That rushing ability changes the complexion of the Hilltoppers’ offense.
Running back Ajay Allen also delivered his best performance of the season, rushing for 105 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yard score in the fourth quarter. Western Kentucky finished with 233 rushing yards and 464 total yards.
Freshman receiver Jonathan Stafford Jr. continues to emerge as the top target.
Stafford caught six passes for 72 yards and his first collegiate touchdown against Missouri State. He now leads WKU with 36 receptions for 332 yards.
The challenge is taking that success on the road. Western Kentucky is 0-4 away from home this season, although those losses included trips to Georgia, Indiana and Nevada.
Sam Houston’s biggest strength this season has been quarterback Landyn Locke.
Locke has completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 1,306 yards, 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions through five games. Sam Houston averages 274 passing yards per game.
Those numbers make last week’s performance against Liberty especially surprising.
The Bearkats were held to only three points and fewer than 300 total yards. Sam Houston punted on its first four possessions and never reached the end zone.
The running game has been the larger concern all season.
Sam Houston averages only 101 rushing yards per game and 3.3 yards per carry, while opponents are averaging more than 211 rushing yards per contest.
That could be particularly problematic after Western Kentucky just rushed for 233 yards against Missouri State.
Sam Houston needs more from veteran running back Alton McCaskill and must avoid becoming completely dependent on Locke.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Glenn looked comfortable against Missouri State and should continue receiving opportunities against a Sam Houston defense allowing opponents to complete passes at an efficient rate.
His connection with Stafford provides WKU with a reliable intermediate and downfield option.
Prediction: Brock Glenn — 242 passing yards
This is the clearest matchup advantage on the field.
Sam Houston is allowing 211.6 rushing yards per game, while Allen just produced 105 against Missouri State.
Expect Western Kentucky to test that weakness early.
Prediction: Ajay Allen — 88 rushing yards
Locke is averaging 261.2 passing yards per game and has thrown 11 touchdowns in five contests.
Sam Houston could again struggle to establish the run, forcing Locke into another high-volume passing night.
Prediction: Landyn Locke — 267 passing yards
Sam Houston averages 22.8 points per game, but that figure includes a 59-point performance against Nicholls. The Bearkats have scored 21, 17, 14 and three points in their other four games.
Western Kentucky’s defense is coming off one of its strongest performances of the season.
Prediction: Sam Houston — 20 points
Glenn’s dual-threat ability gives WKU something Sam Houston must account for on every snap.
Stafford has become the Hilltoppers’ leading receiver and is coming off consecutive strong performances.
Locke is the Bearkats’ best chance to win. His 11-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio shows how efficiently he has operated despite the team’s losing record.
O’Neill leads Sam Houston with 255 receiving yards and remains one of Locke’s most dependable targets.
Western Kentucky needs to establish Allen and Glenn on the ground. Sam Houston’s defense is giving up more than five yards per rushing attempt, making the running game the obvious place to attack.
WKU also needs to prevent Locke from getting comfortable. Sam Houston’s offense is much more dangerous through the air than on the ground.
For the Bearkats, protecting Locke and creating some rushing balance are critical. If Sam Houston becomes one-dimensional, Western Kentucky can attack with pressure packages.
Turnovers may ultimately decide what the point spread suggests will be a close game.
Western Kentucky has the better recent performance, but playing in Huntsville keeps this from being an easy selection.
The Hilltoppers’ biggest advantage is their improved rushing attack against a Sam Houston defense that has struggled badly against the run.
Sam Houston should generate enough passing production with Locke to stay competitive, but its inability to establish the run makes sustaining drives difficult.
The 51.5 total feels slightly high after Sam Houston produced only three points against Liberty.
Sam Houston keeps this competitive behind Locke’s passing, but Western Kentucky controls the line of scrimmage more consistently.
Glenn creates problems with both his arm and legs, Allen produces another strong rushing performance and the Hilltoppers make enough defensive stops in the fourth quarter.
Western Kentucky 27, Sam Houston 20
