This will be the first meeting between the programs. Sacramento State is in its inaugural FBS season and is competing as a MAC affiliate.
Ohio has quietly put together one of the better stretches in the MAC.
After starting 0-1, the Bobcats have won four of their last five, including consecutive conference victories over Kent State and Central Michigan.
The biggest strength has been the rushing attack.
Ohio averages 197.3 rushing yards per game, while opponents are managing only 140.7. The Bobcats rushed for 245 yards on 50 carries against Central Michigan.
Running backs Duncan Brune and Victor Rosa give Ohio a productive one-two combination.
Brune rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown against Central Michigan after producing 86 yards against Kent State. Rosa added 70 yards last week.
Quarterback Nick Poulos also delivered an efficient performance against Central Michigan, completing 11 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Riley Neer, Preston Bowman and Dom Dorwart each caught touchdown passes.
Defensively, Ohio held Central Michigan to 275 total yards and recorded four sacks.
Sacramento State’s transition to FBS football has been difficult.
The Hornets average only 16.3 points and 307.8 total yards per game, including just 103.5 rushing yards per contest.
Quarterback Jackson Sharman has thrown for 1,001 yards and six touchdowns but has also been intercepted five times while completing 55.9 percent of his attempts.
The Hornets struggled badly last week against Bowling Green.
Sacramento State managed only 215 total yards, including 70 rushing yards. Sharman completed 13 of 28 passes for 145 yards, although he did connect with Matt Coleman for a 55-yard touchdown late in the game.
Coleman remains Sacramento State’s most dangerous offensive player. He has 32 receptions for 454 yards and four touchdowns, averaging more than 75 receiving yards per game through six appearances.
The Hornets need him to create explosive plays because sustained drives have been difficult to generate.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Brune has produced 86 and 91 rushing yards in consecutive games and should receive another significant workload.
Sacramento State is allowing 161.3 rushing yards per game and 4.6 yards per carry.
Ohio should attack that weakness early.
Prediction: Duncan Brune — 92 rushing yards
Coleman is clearly Sacramento State’s biggest passing-game threat.
He averages more than 75 receiving yards per game and provided the Hornets’ lone touchdown against Bowling Green.
If Sacramento State falls behind, Coleman should see plenty of targets.
Prediction: Matt Coleman — 72 receiving yards
Sharman averages roughly 200 passing yards in his appearances, but Ohio’s defense is allowing just 208.2 passing yards per game and has surrendered only six passing touchdowns this season.
The Bobcats’ pass rush could make life difficult if Sacramento State becomes one-dimensional.
Prediction: Jackson Sharman — 174 passing yards
Sacramento State allows 30.2 points per game, while Ohio has scored at least 29 points in four of its six contests.
The Bobcats’ rushing advantage should also create favorable red-zone opportunities.
Prediction: Ohio — 31 points
Brune has become Ohio’s most consistent runner and should be featured heavily against a Sacramento State defense vulnerable on the ground.
Neer remains Ohio’s leading receiving threat and caught another touchdown against Central Michigan.
Sharman must protect the football and find enough explosive plays to prevent Ohio from controlling possession.
Coleman leads the Hornets with 454 receiving yards and four touchdowns and represents their best chance to stretch Ohio’s secondary.
Ohio should lean heavily on Brune, Rosa and its rushing attack. Sacramento State has allowed 14 rushing touchdowns and more than 160 rushing yards per game.
Defensively, the Bobcats need to contain Coleman and pressure Sharman before deep routes can develop.
Sacramento State’s best chance is forcing turnovers. Ohio lost two fumbles against Central Michigan despite controlling most of the game.
The Hornets also need to avoid falling behind early. Ohio led Central Michigan 31-0 at halftime, allowing the Bobcats to control the entire second half.
The Ohio -14.5 spread means the Bobcats must win by 15 points or more for an Ohio spread bet to cash.
If Ohio wins by exactly 14—or anything less—Sacramento State +14.5 covers.
That is a sizable road number, especially with Ohio traveling more than 2,000 miles west, but the matchup strongly favors the Bobcats.
Ohio has the superior rushing attack, stronger defense and significantly better recent form. Sacramento State has lost four straight and scored only 26 combined points over its last three games.
The 49.5 total looks slightly high because Sacramento State may struggle to reach 20 points.
Sacramento State gets a few explosive plays from Coleman, but Ohio controls the line of scrimmage.
Brune and Rosa wear down the Hornets’ defense, Ohio’s pass rush makes Sharman uncomfortable and the Bobcats steadily build a comfortable second-half advantage.
