Akron travels to Oxford on Saturday afternoon searching for its first MAC victory of the season when the Zips face Miami (OH) at Yager Stadium.
Miami enters 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MAC play after surviving UMass 20-19. Akron is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play after losing 25-23 to Eastern Michigan on a late field goal.
Miami is favored by 10 points, but Akron’s improved offensive performance last week gives the Zips some reason to believe they can make this more competitive than their record suggests.
Matchup: Akron Zips at Miami (OH) RedHawks Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026 Kickoff: 3:30 PM ET TV/Streaming: ESPN+ Venue: Yager Stadium — Oxford, Ohio Tickets: As low as $32 Point Spread: Miami (OH) -10 Over/Under: 46.5
Miami enters on a one-game winning streak and is 2-1 at home this season. Akron has lost four straight and remains winless in three road games.
Miami’s offense wasn’t spectacular against UMass, but the RedHawks found enough ways to win.
Quarterback Caleb Heavner completed only 6 of 20 passes for 95 yards, but he made a much larger impact with his legs. Heavner rushed 11 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, including a 29-yard run.
Miami finished with 165 rushing yards despite producing only 260 total yards.
Running back Rodney Nelson added 52 yards, while Scoop Smith scored on a 20-yard reverse.
The defense delivered when it mattered most. UMass scored with one second remaining to make it 20-19, but linebacker Malcolm McCain blew up the potential game-winning two-point conversion to preserve the victory.
Miami also held UMass to only 65 rushing yards and collected three sacks.
The RedHawks are allowing just 105.3 rushing yards per game this season, which creates an interesting matchup against an Akron offense that increasingly wants to feature Jordan Gant.
Akron’s record isn’t impressive, but last week’s loss to Eastern Michigan may have been its best MAC performance.
Running back Jordan Gant rushed 22 times for 117 yards, his second consecutive 100-yard performance.
Quarterback Brayden Roggow was equally impressive.
Roggow completed 17 of 24 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, nearly leading Akron to the upset.
Wide receiver Marcel Williams was his primary weapon, catching five passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Marquese Williams added a 27-yard touchdown reception.
The problem has been consistency.
Akron has lost road games to Wake Forest, Minnesota and Central Michigan by margins of 22, 34 and 24 points.
Still, if Roggow plays as efficiently as he did against Eastern Michigan and Gant continues producing on the ground, Akron possesses enough offense to test Miami.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Gant has become Akron’s most dependable offensive weapon.
His 117-yard performance against Eastern Michigan came on 22 carries, and Akron should continue leaning heavily on him to keep Miami’s pass rush from attacking Roggow.
Prediction: Jordan Gant — 86 rushing yards
Heavner’s rushing ability was Miami’s most dangerous quarterback weapon against UMass.
He carried 11 times for 54 yards and scored from nine yards out. Expect designed quarterback runs to remain part of the game plan.
Prediction: Caleb Heavner — 51 rushing yards
Williams is coming off his best game of the season.
He caught five passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns and has the big-play ability Akron will need if it falls behind.
Prediction: Marcel Williams — 68 receiving yards
Akron has allowed 38, 41, 38, 41 and 25 points during its five losses.
Miami’s offense hasn’t been explosive recently, but the matchup provides an opportunity to produce more scoring possessions.
Prediction: Miami (OH) — 28 points
Heavner gives Miami another dimension with his legs. Protecting the football and improving his passing efficiency will be important.
McCain made the game-saving defensive play against UMass and continues to emerge as one of Miami’s defensive leaders.
The veteran runner is coming off consecutive 100-yard performances and represents Akron’s best chance to control possession.
Roggow’s three-touchdown, turnover-free performance against Eastern Michigan gives the Zips hope that their passing game is beginning to improve.
Miami needs to stop Gant and force Akron into obvious passing situations. If the RedHawks control first down, their defensive front should be able to pressure Roggow.
Offensively, Miami needs more consistency through the air. Heavner generated only 95 passing yards against UMass, so the RedHawks cannot rely entirely on defense and special teams.
Akron must avoid the early deficits that have plagued it on the road. The Zips also need Roggow to protect the football and Williams to generate explosive plays.
Miami deserves to be favored at home, but 10 points is a significant number for an offense that scored only 20 points in each of its last two games.
Akron’s improved performance against Eastern Michigan makes the underdog somewhat dangerous, but its road struggles remain difficult to ignore.
The 46.5 total also looks slightly high. Miami’s defense has improved, while its offense appears increasingly comfortable playing a lower-scoring, field-position game.
Akron stays competitive behind Gant and Roggow, but Miami’s defense controls enough possessions to prevent the upset.
Heavner contributes on the ground, the RedHawks create a short field or two, and Miami gradually pulls away in the second half.
