Missouri State travels to Bowling Green on Thursday night to face Western Kentucky in a Conference USA matchup between two teams searching for momentum.
Missouri State enters 1-3, with competitive losses to Marshall and No. 22 SMU following a season-opening defeat at Texas A&M. Western Kentucky is 1-4 and 0-1 in CUSA after losing 34-13 at New Mexico State in its conference opener.
WKU enters as a narrow 2.5-point home favorite, suggesting this could be one of the tighter Weekday CUSA games.

Thursday’s game is WKU’s Black Out game. Western Kentucky owns a 9-2 all-time advantage over Missouri State and has won nine consecutive meetings, including a 27-22 victory last season.
Western Kentucky has faced one of the more difficult opening schedules in Conference USA.
The Hilltoppers’ four losses have come against Nevada, Georgia, Indiana and New Mexico State. Their only victory was a dominant 52-7 performance against Mercyhurst.
Quarterback Rodney Tisdale Jr. continues to show promise despite the record.
Tisdale completed 29 of 40 passes for 314 yards against New Mexico State. The problem was that WKU failed to turn those yards into touchdowns, finishing with only 13 points while allowing six sacks and throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
Freshman receiver Jonathan Stafford Jr. has emerged as one of WKU’s most dependable weapons.
Stafford caught 10 passes for a career-high 108 yards against New Mexico State. He now has 30 receptions after five games and gives Tisdale a reliable target underneath and downfield.
The biggest concern remains the running game. WKU managed only 43 rushing yards against New Mexico State.
Missouri State’s 1-3 record comes against a demanding schedule.
The Bears lost 50-0 at No. 8 Texas A&M before responding with a 48-14 victory over Lindenwood. They then lost 30-24 to Marshall and 34-24 at No. 22 SMU.
Quarterback Skyler Locklear gives Missouri State an experienced passing threat.
Locklear threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns against Marshall. Against SMU, he was more conservative, completing 15 of 19 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Breezy Dubar provided one of Missouri State’s biggest offensive bright spots at SMU, rushing for 76 yards on only seven carries.
The Bears also showed they can compete with quality opponents. They stayed within striking distance of SMU into the fourth quarter despite being outgained 592-239.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Tisdale has now produced consecutive 300-yard passing performances, throwing for 309 against Mercyhurst and 314 against New Mexico State.
WKU’s inability to consistently establish the run should keep the football in Tisdale’s hands.
Prediction: Rodney Tisdale Jr. — 286 passing yards
Stafford’s role continues to expand.
He caught six passes for 66 yards against Mercyhurst before exploding for 10 receptions and 108 yards against New Mexico State.
His target volume makes this one of the more appealing WKU props.
Prediction: Jonathan Stafford Jr. — 72 receiving yards
Locklear has already produced 258 passing yards against Lindenwood and 309 against Marshall.
With Missouri State expected to be in another competitive game, Locklear should receive enough attempts to challenge 200 yards.
Prediction: Skyler Locklear — 231 passing yards
Missouri State has scored exactly 24 points in consecutive games against Marshall and ranked SMU.
WKU has allowed at least 34 points in four of its five games.
Prediction: Missouri State — 27 points
Tisdale is producing yardage, but WKU needs touchdowns. Turning long drives into seven points instead of field goals could determine the game.
Stafford’s 10-catch breakout makes him the receiver Missouri State must identify on every passing down.
Locklear has shown he can produce 300-yard games and should find opportunities against WKU if protection holds up.
Dubar’s explosiveness gives the Bears another way to attack a WKU defense that surrendered 206 rushing yards to New Mexico State.
Western Kentucky must protect Tisdale after allowing six sacks against New Mexico State. The Hilltoppers also need significantly more from their rushing game.
Missouri State needs to attack WKU on the ground while keeping Locklear out of obvious third-and-long situations.
Turnovers could be decisive. WKU’s pick-six against New Mexico State helped change that game, and neither offense is consistent enough to overcome repeated short fields.
The records are poor, but Missouri State has played competitively against Marshall and ranked SMU.
Western Kentucky has the home-field advantage and the more productive passing attack, but the Hilltoppers have struggled badly to finish drives.
The 2.5-point spread reflects how evenly matched these teams appear.
Expect both quarterbacks to generate passing yardage and both defenses to surrender enough scoring opportunities to threaten the 55.5 total.
Missouri State is dangerous enough to keep this close for four quarters, particularly if Dubar establishes the run.
But WKU finally gets a favorable matchup at home after playing four of its first five games on the road.
Tisdale and Stafford connect repeatedly, and the Hilltoppers make one more scoring play late.
