Minnesota travels to West Lafayette on Saturday night for an intriguing Big Ten matchup against Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium.
The Golden Gophers enter 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play after reclaiming the Little Brown Jug with a 20-14 victory over No. 24 Michigan. Purdue is 2-3 and 1-1 in the conference after pulling off a 24-17 road upset of Illinois to bring the Cannon Trophy back to West Lafayette.
Minnesota is only a 2.5-point road favorite, suggesting a competitive matchup between two teams coming off emotional rivalry victories.
Matchup: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Purdue Boilermakers Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Kickoff: 8:00 PM ET TV: Big Ten Network Venue: Ross-Ade Stadium — West Lafayette, Indiana Tickets: As low as $8 Point Spread: Minnesota -2.5 Over/Under: 51.5
Minnesota leads the all-time series 42-35-3 and won last year’s matchup 27-20. Purdue, however, won the previous two meetings before that.
Minnesota’s biggest strength has been a defense capable of creating negative plays and forcing turnovers.
The Gophers limited Michigan to 180 total yards in last week’s 20-14 victory and held the Wolverines to only 79 rushing yards. Minnesota also intercepted Bryce Underwood twice in the second half, setting up critical scoring opportunities.
Quarterback Drake Lindsey endured a difficult first half against Michigan, throwing two interceptions, but responded when Minnesota needed him most.
Lindsey connected with Darius Taylor for the go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown. Through the first four games, Lindsey had completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 951 yards, seven touchdowns and only two interceptions before adding 136 yards and a touchdown against Michigan.
The running game also gives Minnesota multiple options.
TJ Thomas rushed for 56 yards against Michigan after producing 78 against Washington and 122 against Akron. Darius Taylor added 40 rushing yards and the game-winning touchdown reception against the Wolverines.
Minnesota doesn’t necessarily need explosive offensive numbers if its defense continues giving Lindsey favorable field position.
Purdue desperately needed its 24-17 victory at Illinois after losing three straight games.
Quarterback Ryan Browne delivered one of his best performances of the season, completing 18 of 27 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown. Purdue converted all four of its red-zone opportunities and protected the lead with several huge defensive plays late.
Wide receiver Asaad Waseem caught three passes for 98 yards, while Tra’Mar Harris finished with 52 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Fame Ijeboi carried 19 times for 65 yards.
Ijeboi creates an especially interesting storyline because he spent his first two college seasons at Minnesota before transferring to Purdue. He rushed for 441 yards for the Gophers last season.
Purdue’s biggest improvement against Illinois came defensively.
The Boilermakers held Illinois to only 17 points, forced a critical fourth-quarter interception and stopped the Illini on fourth down inside the Purdue 20.
They’ll need another disciplined performance against Minnesota.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Lindsey threw for only 136 yards against Michigan, but that game was dominated by defense and field position.
Before that, he had thrown for 204 yards and three touchdowns in consecutive victories over Akron and Washington.
A close road game should require Minnesota to keep throwing.
Prediction: Drake Lindsey — 236 passing yards
Thomas has surpassed this target in three consecutive games.
He doesn’t need 20 carries to produce because of his explosiveness, and Minnesota should remain committed to the run to keep Browne and Purdue’s offense off the field.
Prediction: TJ Thomas — 71 rushing yards
Ijeboi received 19 carries against Illinois and should again be Purdue’s primary runner.
There’s also obvious motivation against his former program.
Minnesota’s defense is difficult to run against, but a workload approaching 18-20 carries gives Ijeboi a legitimate chance to clear this number.
Prediction: Fame Ijeboi — 67 rushing yards
Browne looked comfortable against Illinois, completing nearly 67 percent of his passes and producing 255 yards.
Minnesota’s defense is considerably stronger, but Purdue may need Browne throwing throughout the fourth quarter.
Prediction: Ryan Browne — 241 passing yards
Lindsey must avoid the first-half turnovers that hurt Minnesota against Michigan. When he protects the football, the Gophers are difficult to beat.
Thomas’ speed gives Minnesota a big-play threat in a game that could otherwise become a physical Big Ten battle.
Browne’s performance at Illinois gave Purdue renewed confidence. He needs another efficient game against a Minnesota defense that excels at forcing turnovers.
The former Minnesota running back gets his first opportunity against his old team. Purdue should give him a substantial workload.
Minnesota needs to pressure Browne and continue forcing turnovers. The Gophers’ defense has already shown it can win games when the offense isn’t operating at its best.
Offensively, Minnesota needs better consistency from Lindsey and must establish Thomas early.
Purdue needs to protect Browne and repeat the red-zone efficiency it showed against Illinois. The Boilermakers cannot afford empty possessions against Minnesota.
Ijeboi also needs to keep Purdue ahead of the chains. If Minnesota forces repeated third-and-long situations, its pass rush becomes a major advantage.
This looks like one of the most evenly matched Big Ten games of the weekend.
Minnesota owns the better record and the more consistent defense, but Purdue is back at Ross-Ade after proving it can win a close conference game on the road.
The 2.5-point spread feels appropriate.
Minnesota’s turnover creation and defensive consistency provide the biggest difference, but Purdue should stay within one possession throughout.
The 51.5 total looks slightly high for two teams comfortable playing slower, field-position football.
Purdue keeps this close behind Browne and Ijeboi, but Minnesota’s defense creates the decisive play late.
Lindsey avoids a repeat of his early mistakes against Michigan, Thomas provides balance and the Gophers escape West Lafayette with another Big Ten victory.
