Miami (OH) heads to Amherst on Saturday afternoon for a Mid-American Conference matchup against Massachusetts at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
Miami enters 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MAC after suffering a heartbreaking 24-20 loss to Bowling Green. Massachusetts is 4-1 and 1-1 in conference play after its undefeated start ended with a 38-14 home loss to Eastern Michigan.
Despite the difference in records, Miami enters as a 2.5-point road favorite, setting up what should be one of the weekend’s more competitive MAC games.

UMass has designated the matchup as its Homecoming game. The Minutemen opened the season with four consecutive victories before Eastern Michigan handed them their first defeat.
Miami appeared positioned to defeat Bowling Green last week after taking a 20-17 lead with less than two minutes remaining.
Instead, Bowling Green drove 75 yards and scored the winning touchdown with only eight seconds left.
Quarterback Caleb Heavner, making his first start of the season, threw for 198 yards and one touchdown. Lynel Billups-Williams supplied one of Miami’s biggest plays with a 39-yard reception before later catching a 10-yard touchdown.
Miami’s biggest problem was turning drives into touchdowns.
Kicker Kellan McLaughlin went 4-for-4 on field goals, accounting for 12 of the RedHawks’ 20 points. That’s excellent special-teams production, but Miami needs more touchdowns if it wants to win consistently.
The RedHawks have now scored 14, 45, 31, 24 and 20 points through five games. Their passing attack has demonstrated explosive potential throughout the season, especially when David McComb was healthy and throwing for 1,121 yards and seven touchdowns through his first four games.
Massachusetts opened the season 4-0 for the first time since 2007, defeating Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Stonehill and Sacramento State.
Those victories weren’t close. UMass scored at least 35 points in every game and held three consecutive opponents to 14 points or fewer.
Eastern Michigan changed the story.
The Eagles defeated UMass 38-14, finishing with a 411-316 advantage in total offense and outrushing the Minutemen 192-106.
Quarterback William “Pop” Watson III completed 20 of 27 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown despite the loss.
Wide receiver Jabari Lewis produced career highs with six catches for 102 yards, while running back Curtis Kimmons IV rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
UMass now has to prove that last week’s defensive problems were an exception rather than the beginning of a trend.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Watson threw for 210 yards against Eastern Michigan and opened the season by completing 19 of 22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Rutgers.
Miami’s defense allowed more than 286 passing yards per game through its first four contests.
Prediction: Pop Watson III — 218 passing yards
Kimmons rushed for 73 yards against Eastern Michigan after producing 78 yards and a touchdown in the season opener at Rutgers.
UMass needs to reestablish the rushing attack after being held to 106 team rushing yards last week.
Prediction: Curtis Kimmons IV — 67 rushing yards
Miami has already scored 45 against Holy Cross, 31 against Cincinnati and 24 against UConn.
UMass entered last week with impressive defensive numbers but allowed Eastern Michigan to score 38 points and gain 411 yards.
Miami’s offense should have enough opportunities to get back into the mid-20s.
Prediction: Miami (OH) — 27 points
Before last week’s loss, Massachusetts had scored 37, 37, 36 and 35 points in its first four games.
Miami’s defense has also shown vulnerability, allowing more than 30 points per game through the RedHawks’ first four contests.
A bounce-back performance at home should get UMass above three touchdowns.
Prediction: Massachusetts — 24 points
Heavner handled his first start effectively against Bowling Green. If he remains behind center, Miami needs him to turn productive drives into touchdowns rather than field-goal attempts.
Billups-Williams produced Miami’s biggest receiving plays last week and could become increasingly important in the RedHawks’ passing attack.
Watson is the player most capable of swinging this game. He can attack through the air while also creating additional offense with his legs.
Kimmons gives the Minutemen a physical rushing option and should receive another substantial workload after averaging more than five yards per carry against Eastern Michigan.
Miami needs to finish drives. Four field goals kept the RedHawks competitive against Bowling Green, but touchdowns will be necessary on the road.
The RedHawks also need to pressure Watson without allowing him to escape the pocket.
Massachusetts must rediscover the defense that powered its 4-0 start. Eastern Michigan controlled possession and generated 192 rushing yards, something UMass cannot repeat against another MAC opponent.
The Minutemen also need a stronger start after trailing Eastern Michigan throughout last week’s loss.
The records suggest Massachusetts should be favored, but Miami has played the more demanding schedule and possesses enough passing talent to create problems.
UMass deserves respect for its 4-0 start and its season-opening victory at Rutgers, but the 38-14 loss to Eastern Michigan exposed some vulnerabilities.
Miami’s biggest question is quarterback continuity. If the RedHawks get stable production under center and convert more red-zone opportunities into touchdowns, they have the pieces to win on the road.
The 47.5 total feels slightly low. UMass averaged more than 36 points during its 4-0 start, and Miami has scored at least 20 in four consecutive games.
This should remain a one-possession game deep into the fourth quarter.
Watson and Kimmons generate enough offense to keep Massachusetts within striking distance, but Miami’s passing game produces a couple of explosive plays and McLaughlin gives the RedHawks an advantage if the game comes down to a late field goal.
