Florida State travels to Louisville on Friday night for an important ACC matchup against the Cardinals at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Florida State enters 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC after an impressive 38-7 victory over Virginia. Louisville is 2-3 and 1-2 in conference play after suffering its second consecutive three-point loss, falling 31-28 at NC State.
Louisville enters as a 5.5-point home favorite, but Florida State’s improving rushing attack and aggressive defense should make this an entertaining Friday-night matchup.
Matchup: Florida State Seminoles at Louisville Cardinals Date: Friday, October 9, 2026 Kickoff: 7:00 PM ET TV: ESPN Venue: L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium — Louisville, Kentucky Tickets: As low as $39 Point Spread: Louisville -5.5 Over/Under: 58.5
Florida State owns an 18-6 all-time advantage in the series. The most recent meeting came in the 2023 ACC Championship Game, when the Seminoles defeated Louisville 16-6.
Florida State may have found its offensive identity.
Quarterback Ashton Daniels produced a historic performance against Virginia, rushing for 136 yards and five touchdowns while completing 12 of 19 passes for 183 yards.
His five rushing touchdowns set Florida State and Doak Campbell Stadium single-game records.
The Seminoles finished with 281 rushing yards and 464 total yards, while Ousmane Kromah added 80 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Florida State’s defense was equally impressive.
The Seminoles recorded 10 sacks, held Virginia to 205 total yards and limited the Cavaliers to only 37 rushing yards. Virginia scored on its opening possession and was shut out the rest of the afternoon.
The question is whether Florida State can duplicate that physical performance on the road.
Louisville’s 2-3 record is misleading in one important respect.
All three Cardinals losses have come by exactly three points — 41-38 against Ole Miss, 30-27 against Wake Forest and 31-28 at NC State.
Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has been one of the ACC’s most productive passers.
Through five games, Kienholz has completed 96 of 139 passes for 1,394 yards, nine touchdowns and only one interception, averaging 278.8 passing yards per game.
Against NC State, Kienholz threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
Louisville also finally rediscovered its rushing attack. Isaac Brown rushed for 125 yards on nine carries, including a 70-yard touchdown, while Keyjuan Brown added 88 yards and a score. Louisville finished with 231 rushing yards and 485 total yards.
The concern is defense. Louisville is allowing 423 total yards and 29.2 points per game.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Kienholz has been remarkably consistent through five games.
Louisville averages 287.4 passing yards per game, and the Cardinals are unlikely to abandon their aggressive passing approach at home.
Florida State’s pass rush is dangerous, but Louisville should still give Kienholz enough attempts to threaten this number.
Prediction: Lincoln Kienholz — 284 passing yards
Daniels’ 136-yard performance against Virginia was not simply the result of one scramble. Florida State repeatedly used his mobility as a major part of the offense.
Louisville is allowing more than 156 rushing yards per game, giving Daniels opportunities on designed runs and broken passing plays.
Prediction: Ashton Daniels — 68 rushing yards
Richardson is coming off eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown against NC State and leads Louisville with 445 receiving yards.
Kienholz should continue looking his way in a matchup where Louisville may need to score into the 30s.
Prediction: Tre Richardson — 81 receiving yards
Louisville is averaging 38.6 points and 486 total yards per game despite its losing record.
Florida State’s defense was dominant against Virginia, but the Seminoles surrendered 50 points at Alabama earlier this season.
Louisville has too much offensive talent to expect another low-scoring Florida State game.
Prediction: Louisville — 34 points
Kienholz has nine touchdown passes against only one interception. His ability to handle Florida State’s pass rush will be critical.
Brown’s 125-yard performance against NC State gives Jeff Brohm another explosive option alongside Keyjuan Brown.
Daniels is the matchup problem Louisville must solve. His combination of passing ability and quarterback runs can completely change defensive responsibilities.
Kromah has provided Florida State with a dependable rushing option and enters the matchup as the Seminoles’ leading running back.
Louisville must protect Kienholz. Florida State just produced 10 sacks against Virginia, and repeated negative plays could destroy the Cardinals’ offensive rhythm.
The Cardinals also have to contain Daniels. Allowing him to escape the pocket creates exactly the type of explosive rushing plays Florida State used to dominate Virginia.
Florida State needs to establish Kromah and Daniels on the ground while preventing Louisville from creating quick-strike passing touchdowns.
Turnovers could ultimately decide a game between two relatively evenly matched teams.
Louisville’s record may be 2-3, but the Cardinals have lost those three games by a combined nine points.
They also have the more consistent passing offense and are back at home, where they defeated SMU earlier this season.
Florida State’s defensive performance against Virginia makes the Seminoles dangerous, particularly if the pass rush can disrupt Kienholz.
Still, Louisville’s combination of Kienholz, Richardson and its two running backs should produce enough offense.
The 58.5 total also looks reachable with both teams capable of generating explosive plays.
Florida State keeps this close behind Daniels’ mobility and its defensive front, but Louisville finally finishes a tight game.
Kienholz makes several important throws in the fourth quarter, while the Cardinals’ rushing attack prevents Florida State from focusing entirely on the pass.
