Coastal Carolina travels to Huntington on Saturday night for a Sun Belt East matchup against Marshall at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Marshall enters 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Sun Belt play after falling 45-17 at undefeated James Madison. Coastal Carolina is 1-4 and 0-1 in the conference after a fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short in a 31-24 loss to Georgia Southern.
Marshall is favored by three points at home, and with both defenses coming off games in which they surrendered more than 30 points, the 57.5 total suggests another potentially high-scoring Sun Belt matchup.
Matchup: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Marshall Thundering Herd Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Kickoff: 7:00 PM ET TV: ESPN+ Venue: Joan C. Edwards Stadium — Huntington, West Virginia Tickets: As low as $33 Point Spread: Marshall -3 Over/Under: 57.5
Marshall won the last meeting in Huntington 31-19 in 2024, while Coastal Carolina answered with a 44-27 victory last season in Conway. Saturday is also Marshall’s annual “We Are … Herd Strong!” game.
Marshall’s trip to James Madison turned ugly in the second quarter, but the Thundering Herd still produced 444 total yards, including 309 through the air.
Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson threw for 221 yards and a touchdown, while backup Zion Turner added 88 passing yards. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw caught a touchdown pass on Marshall’s opening drive as the Herd initially built a 14-10 advantage.
The problem was defense.
James Madison rushed for 310 yards and finished with 573 total yards. Marshall allowed four touchdowns in the second quarter alone, including touchdown runs of 73 and 33 yards.
That continues a concerning trend. Marshall has shown it can score — posting 28 against Middle Tennessee, 30 against Missouri State and 36 against Gardner-Webb — but its defense has repeatedly allowed opponents to remain in games.
Returning home should help, especially considering Marshall won its first two home games this season.
Coastal Carolina has lost three straight, but quarterback Deuce Bailey gave the Chanticleers reason for optimism against Georgia Southern.
Bailey completed 19 of 33 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns without an interception while adding 58 rushing yards. Coastal finished with 370 yards of offense.
Wide receiver Karmello English led Coastal with five receptions for 81 yards and caught a 29-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Running back Dominic Lee-Knicely added 74 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Robby Washington produced one of the game’s biggest plays with a 73-yard punt-return touchdown.
The biggest problem was self-inflicted damage.
Two first-half fumbles near the goal line ended scoring opportunities against Georgia Southern. In a game Coastal eventually lost by seven points, those mistakes were enormous.
The Chanticleers cannot afford similar turnovers in Huntington.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Del Rio-Wilson threw for 386 yards against Gardner-Webb before producing 221 against James Madison.
Coastal Carolina just allowed Georgia Southern to gain 407 total yards, and Marshall should continue attacking through the air.
Prediction: Carlos Del Rio-Wilson — 257 passing yards
Bailey is coming off one of his cleaner performances, throwing two touchdowns without an interception.
Marshall’s defense has struggled to prevent explosive plays and allowed James Madison to consistently move the football.
If Coastal falls behind, Bailey’s volume should increase.
Prediction: Deuce Bailey — 241 passing yards
English was Bailey’s most productive receiver against Georgia Southern, finishing with 81 yards and a touchdown.
Marshall’s secondary allowed 263 passing yards to James Madison, and English should again be heavily involved.
Prediction: Karmello English — 73 receiving yards
Marshall has reached at least 30 points twice in its last three games.
Coastal Carolina has allowed 31, 22, 34 and 31 points in four of its five games this season.
With Marshall back at home, the Herd should create enough scoring opportunities to reach the low 30s.
Prediction: Marshall — 31 points
Del Rio-Wilson remains the key to Marshall’s offense. His mobility and ability to spread the football around give the Herd multiple ways to attack.
Turner-Bradshaw caught Marshall’s first touchdown at James Madison and remains one of Del Rio-Wilson’s most dangerous targets.
Bailey’s ability to contribute through both the air and on the ground creates the biggest challenge for Marshall’s defense.
English is coming off an 81-yard performance and gives Coastal a legitimate downfield weapon.
Marshall must fix its run defense after surrendering 310 yards to James Madison. Coastal may not possess JMU’s rushing attack, but Bailey and Lee-Knicely are capable of exploiting poor gap discipline.
Offensively, Marshall needs to protect Del Rio-Wilson and avoid the red-zone turnover that helped change the James Madison game.
Coastal Carolina’s biggest priority is ball security. Two fumbles near the goal line were costly against Georgia Southern, and repeating those mistakes on the road would be difficult to overcome.
Special teams could also matter after Washington’s punt-return touchdown last week.
This feels much closer than the teams’ records suggest.
Coastal Carolina has lost three straight, but two of those losses came by single digits. Marshall is 3-2, but its three victories came by a combined nine points.
Both offenses have enough playmakers to exploit defenses that have struggled with consistency.
Marshall gets the edge because of home-field advantage and the more proven passing attack, but Coastal should keep this competitive into the fourth quarter.
The 57.5 total looks slightly low given the defensive issues both teams displayed last week.
Expect a back-and-forth Sun Belt matchup with both quarterbacks producing.
Bailey and English keep Coastal within striking distance, but Del Rio-Wilson makes a few more plays late and Marshall gets a much-needed conference victory at home.
