Central Michigan heads to Athens on Saturday afternoon for an important Mid-American Conference matchup against Ohio at Peden Stadium.
Both teams enter 3-2 overall and 1-0 in MAC play after opening their conference schedules with victories. Central Michigan dominated Akron 41-17, while Ohio survived a defensive battle at Kent State, winning 13-10.
Ohio enters as a 3.5-point home favorite, but Central Michigan’s physical rushing attack makes this an intriguing matchup between two teams that want to establish themselves early in the MAC race.

Saturday is also Ohio’s Homecoming game. Central Michigan has historically controlled the series, holding a 27-7-2 advantage through 36 previous meetings.
Central Michigan enters with momentum after producing its best offensive performance of the season against Akron.
The Chippewas scored 41 points, including 21 in the second quarter and 14 more in the third. Quarterback Angel Flores was the centerpiece of the offense, rushing for 154 yards on 18 carries and scoring on a 55-yard touchdown run. He also threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Foster.
Central Michigan finished the game with four rushing touchdowns.
The Chippewas’ offensive philosophy is clear. Central Michigan averages 202.2 rushing yards per game compared with only 84.8 passing yards. The offense has scored 10 rushing touchdowns against just two passing touchdowns through five games.
That makes Flores particularly important. He isn’t a traditional high-volume passer, but his ability to run the football forces defenses to account for another ball carrier on every snap.
Central Michigan’s defense also created three interceptions and three sacks against Akron, helping turn a scoreless first quarter into a comfortable victory.
Ohio’s 13-10 victory at Kent State wasn’t pretty, but it demonstrated that the Bobcats can win when their passing game struggles.
Ohio managed only 72 passing yards, but rushed for 181 yards and held Kent State to just 49 rushing yards.
Running back Duncan Brune led Ohio with 86 rushing yards on 18 carries, while quarterback Matt Vezza delivered the game’s biggest offensive play with a 35-yard touchdown run.
Ohio’s offense has averaged 187.8 rushing yards per game through five contests, while the defense is allowing only 144.6 rushing yards per game. The Bobcats are also converting nearly 50 percent of their third-down opportunities.
The challenge against Central Michigan will be stopping another run-heavy offense.
Ohio knows what is coming. The question is whether the Bobcats can consistently contain Flores while also handling Central Michigan’s running-back rotation.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Flores is clearly the player Ohio must identify on every snap.
His 154-yard performance against Akron demonstrated how dangerous he becomes once he reaches the second level. Central Michigan’s offensive identity is built around the ground game, so his rushing workload should remain significant.
Prediction: Angel Flores — 91 rushing yards
Brune was Ohio’s most productive traditional runner against Kent State, gaining 86 yards on 18 attempts.
Ohio should continue relying on the rushing attack after throwing for only 72 yards last week.
Prediction: Duncan Brune — 76 rushing yards
Ohio is averaging 26.8 points per game, while Central Michigan is allowing 25.4.
The Bobcats scored only 13 at Kent State, but playing at home should help an offense that scored 29, 36 and 35 in three consecutive games earlier this season.
Prediction: Ohio — 27 points
Central Michigan’s season scoring average is only 17.6, but that number is heavily influenced by difficult road games against New Mexico and Miami.
The 41-point explosion against Akron showed what this offense can do against MAC competition.
Prediction: Central Michigan — 23 points
Flores is essentially the centerpiece of Central Michigan’s rushing attack. Ohio must keep him from creating the same explosive quarterback runs that overwhelmed Akron.
Lewis produced a 71-yard touchdown reception against Akron and gives the Chippewas a much-needed big-play threat when defenses concentrate heavily on stopping the run.
Brune’s 86-yard effort against Kent State helped the Bobcats overcome a difficult passing day. Expect another substantial workload.
Vezza has completed nearly 69 percent of his passes this season and has thrown four touchdowns, but his running ability proved decisive against Kent State.
Ohio’s first priority is containing Flores. Central Michigan is averaging more than 200 rushing yards per game, so forcing the Chippewas into obvious passing situations would significantly change the matchup.
Offensively, Ohio needs better production through the air. Seventy-two passing yards may have been enough against Kent State, but relying entirely on the run becomes dangerous against a Central Michigan defense coming off a three-interception performance.
Central Michigan needs to create turnovers and keep Ohio from controlling long drives with Brune and its rushing attack.
This matchup looks considerably tighter than Central Michigan’s 41-point performance against Akron might suggest.
Both teams want to run the football, both opened conference play with victories and neither passing attack has been consistently explosive.
That makes possession, turnovers and field position especially important.
Ohio gets the slight edge because of home-field advantage and a defense that just held Kent State to 10 points and 49 rushing yards.
The 47.5 total, however, feels slightly low if both rushing attacks continue producing.
Central Michigan makes this a physical four-quarter game behind Flores and its rushing attack.
But Ohio’s defense creates a couple of key stops late, while Brune and Vezza combine to control the fourth quarter.
