Ball State steps out of Mid-American Conference play Saturday afternoon for a difficult road matchup against Northwestern at the new Ryan Field in Evanston.
Northwestern enters 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten after an impressive 34-13 victory over Penn State in the first game played at the rebuilt Ryan Field. Ball State is 1-4 and 0-2 in the MAC after losing 39-24 to Toledo.
The Wildcats are massive 36.5-point favorites, making the biggest question less about who wins and more about whether Northwestern can create enough separation to cover one of the largest spreads on the Week 6 board.
Matchup: Ball State Cardinals at Northwestern Wildcats Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Kickoff: 12:30 PM ETTV: Big Ten Network Venue: Ryan Field — Evanston, Illinois Tickets: As low as $94 Point Spread: Northwestern -36.5 Over/Under: 52.5
This is only the second all-time meeting between the programs. Their first matchup came in 2015. Saturday is also Northwestern’s Homecoming game and just the second contest played at the new Ryan Field.
Northwestern produced one of the most impressive rushing performances in college football last weekend.
The Wildcats ran for 413 yards in their 34-13 victory over Penn State, their highest rushing total since 2003 and the most by a Big Ten team against FBS competition so far this season.
Caleb Komolafe carried 25 times for 188 yards and a touchdown, while Joseph Himon II needed only 10 carries to produce 162 yards and two scores.
Together, they rushed for 350 yards.
Quarterback Aidan Chiles didn’t need to throw often, completing 10 of 14 passes for 93 yards. He added 21 rushing yards and another touchdown.
Northwestern’s defense was equally impressive, holding Penn State to 291 total yards and only 48 rushing yards.
That combination presents a major problem for Ball State.
Ball State has lost three consecutive games, but there were encouraging offensive signs against Toledo.
Quarterback Keldric Luster completed 21 of 33 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Donovan Hamilton caught six passes for 70 yards, while Jabari Smith recorded six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Running back TJ Horton also provided a major spark, rushing nine times for 90 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown.
The problem was Ball State’s defense.
Toledo rushed for 352 yards and finished with 553 total yards. The Rockets averaged 6.9 yards per rushing attempt.
Now Ball State must face a Northwestern rushing attack coming off a 413-yard performance.
The Cardinals are also allowing 243.8 passing yards per game, while opponents have thrown 12 touchdown passes through five contests.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
This matchup strongly favors Northwestern’s running game.
Komolafe rushed for 188 yards against Penn State, while Ball State allowed Toledo to rush for 352 yards last weekend.
Northwestern should establish the run immediately and could spend much of the second half protecting a large lead.
Prediction: Caleb Komolafe — 126 rushing yards
Himon gives Northwestern a second explosive option in the backfield.
He averaged an incredible 16.2 yards per carry against Penn State and scored twice.
A projected blowout could actually help this prop because Northwestern should rotate its backs while remaining committed to the run.
Prediction: Joseph Himon II — 86 rushing yards
Ball State has surrendered 56, 17, 51, 26 and 39 points through five games.
Northwestern has already scored 41 against Colorado and 34 against both South Dakota State and Penn State.
With such a favorable matchup in the trenches, the Wildcats should receive enough possessions to reach 40.
Prediction: Northwestern — 45 points
Luster enters with 662 passing yards in four appearances, an average of 165.5 per game.
He threw for 224 against Toledo, but Northwestern’s defense represents a substantial step up after holding Penn State to 291 total yards.
Pressure and unfavorable down-and-distance situations could limit Ball State’s passing production.
Prediction: Keldric Luster — 174 passing yards
Komolafe’s 188-yard performance against Penn State established him as the focal point of Northwestern’s offense. Ball State’s struggles defending the run create another excellent matchup.
Himon’s explosiveness makes Northwestern’s backfield difficult to defend. Even limited touches can produce huge gains.
Luster has thrown for 662 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions this season. Ball State needs him to avoid turnovers if the Cardinals hope to remain competitive.
Horton’s 66-yard touchdown against Toledo showed he can create explosive plays. Ball State may need several of them Saturday.
Northwestern should attack Ball State’s run defense immediately. If Komolafe and Himon consistently reach the second level, the Wildcats can control possession and wear down the Cardinals.
Defensively, Northwestern needs to eliminate Ball State’s few big-play opportunities and force Luster into long passing situations.
Ball State must avoid falling behind early. The Cardinals have already lost 56-3 at Ohio State and 51-15 at Liberty this season.
For an upset to become remotely possible, Ball State needs turnovers, explosive plays and perhaps special-teams help.
A 36.5-point spread is enormous, even when a Big Ten team hosts a struggling MAC opponent.
But this matchup is particularly difficult for Ball State.
The Cardinals just allowed 352 rushing yards to Toledo, while Northwestern produced 413 rushing yards against Penn State.
That is the clearest matchup advantage on the field.
Northwestern should control the line of scrimmage, build an early lead and spend much of the second half pounding away with its running backs.
The 52.5 total is more difficult. Northwestern may score into the 40s, but Ball State could struggle to contribute enough points to push the game over.
Ball State has shown some offensive improvement, but Northwestern’s physical advantage should dominate this matchup.
Komolafe and Himon control the ground game, Chiles doesn’t need to take many risks, and Northwestern’s defense prevents the Cardinals from sustaining drives.
