The Toledo Rockets open Mid-American Conference play Saturday afternoon when they travel to Muncie to face the Ball State Cardinals at Scheumann Stadium.
Toledo enters 3-1 and riding a three-game winning streak after defeating San Diego State 41-16. Ball State is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MAC after a 26-13 loss at Kent State.
The Rockets enter as heavy road favorites, and their explosive passing offense creates a difficult matchup for a Ball State defense that has surrendered 37.5 points per game.
Matchup: Toledo Rockets at Ball State Cardinals Date: Saturday, October 3, 2026 Kickoff: 2:00 PM ET TV: ESPN+ Venue: Scheumann Stadium — Muncie, Indiana Tickets: As low as $21 Point Spread: Toledo -19.5 Over/Under: 51.5
Toledo leads the all-time series 28-21-1 and has won four of the last five meetings, including the last two played in Muncie.
Toledo has become one of the MAC’s most dangerous offensive teams.
The Rockets are averaging 43.3 points and 468 total yards per game, including 305.5 yards through the air. Quarterback John Alan Richter has completed 79 of 118 passes for 1,161 yards, 12 touchdowns and only one interception.
Richter was excellent against San Diego State, completing 16 of 22 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns in the 41-16 victory.
Bryson Hammer delivered the breakout performance, catching six passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Hammer now leads Toledo with 286 receiving yards through four games.
The Rockets have also demonstrated balance, rushing for 210 yards against San Diego State.
That combination presents major problems for Ball State.
Ball State’s season has included losses to Ohio State, Liberty and Kent State, with its only victory coming against Stony Brook.
The Cardinals are averaging just 18 points and 279.5 total yards per game. Their passing attack has produced only 158.3 yards per contest.
Tyler Mizzell made his first start against Kent State and completed 16 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown.
Wide receiver Quinton Hamilton provided one of Ball State’s bright spots, catching seven passes for a career-high 80 yards and his first collegiate receiving touchdown.
Ball State will need significantly more offensive production Saturday because Toledo has scored at least 41 points in each of its last three games.
College player props vary by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Richter is averaging 290.3 passing yards per game and has thrown 12 touchdowns against only one interception.
Ball State has allowed opponents to average 254.5 passing yards and 8.3 yards per attempt.
Prediction: John Alan Richter — 287 passing yards
Hammer is coming off the best performance of his career.
He produced 133 yards against San Diego State and has four receptions of at least 30 yards this season.
Ball State’s issues defending explosive passing plays make Hammer especially dangerous.
Prediction: Bryson Hammer — 78 receiving yards
Toledo has scored 63, 49 and 41 points during its three-game winning streak.
Ball State, meanwhile, has allowed 56 points to Ohio State, 51 to Liberty and 26 to Kent State.
Toledo should have opportunities both through the air and on the ground.
Prediction: Toledo — 38 points
Mizzell threw for 164 yards in his first start, and now faces a Toledo defense allowing only 181.3 passing yards per game.
The Rockets held San Diego State to 296 total yards while forcing two turnovers.
Prediction: Tyler Mizzell — 168 passing yards
Richter has become the driving force behind an offense averaging more than 43 points. His efficiency and ability to create explosive plays give Toledo a major advantage.
After his 133-yard performance against San Diego State, Hammer gives Ball State another major problem in the secondary.
Mizzell needs to protect the football and sustain drives. Ball State cannot afford repeated three-and-outs against Toledo’s offense.
Hamilton’s seven-catch, 80-yard game against Kent State suggests he could become Mizzell’s primary target.
Toledo needs to attack Ball State vertically while maintaining enough rushing balance to prevent the Cardinals from focusing entirely on Richter.
Defensively, the Rockets should force Ball State into obvious passing situations. Toledo opponents are converting only 34.9 percent of third downs this season.
Ball State must shorten the game, avoid turnovers and prevent Toledo from generating explosive touchdowns.
The matchup strongly favors Toledo.
The Rockets average 468 yards per game while Ball State allows nearly 454. Toledo also owns significant advantages at quarterback and in explosive-play capability.
The biggest question is whether Toledo can cover a large 19.5-point road spread.
Ball State has lost its three games against FBS opponents by 53, 36 and 13 points. Toledo has enough offensive firepower to eventually create separation.
The 51.5 total is tighter. If Toledo builds a large lead and controls the second half with its running game, the final score could remain just below the number.
Ball State should compete better at home than it did during its three-game road stretch, but Toledo presents too many offensive problems.
Richter and Hammer create explosive plays, while the Rockets defense limits Ball State’s scoring opportunities.
