Purdue travels to Champaign on Saturday afternoon for a Big Ten rivalry matchup against Illinois with the Cannon Trophy on the line.
Illinois enters 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play after a 42-19 loss at Ohio State. Purdue is 1-3 and 0-1 following a 49-10 home loss to No. 3 Notre Dame.
The Fighting Illini return home as 10-point favorites in a game featuring two offenses that have shown they can score, helping produce a relatively high 60.5-point total.

Illinois’ official schedule confirms the Homecoming matchup at Gies Memorial Stadium, while Purdue lists the game as the annual battle for the Cannon Trophy.
Illinois struggled to slow Ohio State last week, but the Illini offense still has plenty of weapons.
Quarterback Katin Houser has completed 81 of 118 passes for 1,021 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions through four games. Illinois is averaging 419.8 total yards and 34 points per contest.
Houser threw for 263 yards and a touchdown against Ohio State despite facing one of the nation’s strongest defenses.
Running back Aidan Laughery was even more impressive, carrying 11 times for 113 yards. He also produced a 77-yard touchdown run against Southern Illinois the previous week.
Illinois has enough balance to create problems for a Purdue defense that has allowed 38 points to Wake Forest, 52 to UCLA and 49 to Notre Dame during its current three-game losing streak.
Purdue’s season started with a 44-19 victory over Indiana State, but the Boilermakers have since lost three consecutive games.
The offense completely stalled against Notre Dame.
Ryan Browne and Evans Chuba combined to complete 25 of 37 passes for only 178 yards and one touchdown, while Purdue managed just 41 rushing yards from leading rusher Fame Ijeboi.
Purdue does have evidence that its offense can produce points. The Boilermakers scored 36 against Wake Forest and 38 at UCLA before running into Notre Dame’s defense.
The biggest question is whether Purdue can protect its quarterback and generate explosive plays against an Illinois defense that just surrendered 42 points and 518 yards to Ohio State.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Houser is averaging 255.3 passing yards per game and has surpassed 260 yards in each of Illinois’ last two contests.
He threw for 305 yards against Southern Illinois and 263 against Ohio State.
Purdue’s recent defensive struggles create another favorable opportunity.
Prediction: Katin Houser — 278 passing yards
Laughery is coming off a 113-yard performance against Ohio State and has shown legitimate big-play ability.
Illinois averages 164.5 rushing yards per game, and playing as a 10-point favorite could lead to an increased second-half rushing workload.
Prediction: Aidan Laughery — 82 rushing yards
Illinois has already scored 42 against UAB and 48 against Southern Illinois.
The Illini average 34 points and nearly 420 yards per game, while Purdue enters after allowing 49 points to Notre Dame.
Back at home, Illinois should have enough scoring opportunities to reach the mid-30s.
Prediction: Illinois — 35 points
Browne’s workload is less certain after Purdue used both him and Chuba against Notre Dame.
The Boilermakers combined for only 178 passing yards in that game, and another quarterback rotation would make it difficult for Browne to accumulate a large individual total.
Prediction: Ryan Browne — 198 passing yards
Houser has nine touchdown passes through four games and gives Illinois a reliable veteran quarterback capable of attacking Purdue downfield.
Laughery’s 113-yard effort against Ohio State was one of Illinois’ biggest positives from the loss.
Purdue needs Browne to create more explosive passes after the offense struggled badly against Notre Dame.
Ijeboi rushed for only 41 yards against Notre Dame. Purdue needs significantly more from its ground game to keep Illinois’ offense off the field.
Illinois needs to remain balanced. Houser has been productive through the air, but Laughery’s emergence gives the Illini another way to control the game.
Defensively, Illinois must avoid the explosive plays that hurt it against Ohio State.
Purdue needs to establish Ijeboi and protect the quarterback. Becoming one-dimensional against Illinois could allow the Illini pass rush to take control.
Turnovers will also be critical. Purdue cannot give Illinois short fields in a game where the Boilermakers are already double-digit underdogs.
Purdue has shown enough offensive ability to make this competitive for stretches, but Illinois has clear advantages in consistency and quarterback production.
Houser is completing nearly 69 percent of his passes, while Laughery gives Illinois an improving rushing attack.
Purdue’s defense has surrendered at least 38 points in three consecutive games, making it difficult to trust the Boilermakers to slow Illinois for four quarters.
The 60.5 total feels slightly high despite both teams’ defensive issues.
Purdue generates more offense than it did against Notre Dame, but Illinois eventually creates separation.
Houser produces another productive passing afternoon, Laughery controls portions of the second half, and the Illini retain the Cannon Trophy.
