This will be the first meeting since Notre Dame defeated North Carolina 45-32 in Chapel Hill in 2022. The Irish hold a commanding 21-2 all-time series advantage.
Notre Dame has looked like a legitimate national contender through four games.
The Irish have defeated Wisconsin 41-13, Rice 52-0, Michigan State 27-10 and Purdue 49-10. Their defense has surrendered only 33 total points, while the offense is averaging more than 42 points per game.
Quarterback CJ Carr has been extremely efficient, completing 67 of 95 passes for 963 yards, nine touchdowns and only one interception. He is completing 70.5 percent of his passes and averaging 240.8 yards per game.
Carr threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns against Purdue while also rushing for a score.
Notre Dame’s defense may be even more impressive. Against Purdue, the Irish built a 35-0 halftime advantage while holding the Boilermakers to only 90 first-half yards. Bryce Young recorded two sacks, including a forced fumble that resulted in a touchdown.
North Carolina is coming off a bye after suffering its first loss of the season at Clemson.
The Tar Heels led Clemson 17-3 before eventually falling 28-20. North Carolina rushed for 214 yards in the loss, led by Benjamin Hall’s career-high 130 yards.
Hall leads the Tar Heels with 215 rushing yards, while quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has completed 44 of 78 passes for 611 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
UNC’s defense has also played well statistically, allowing 13.7 points and 312.3 total yards per game. Opponents have averaged only 3.4 yards per rushing attempt.
The challenge is that Notre Dame represents easily the most complete opponent the Tar Heels have faced.

Notre Dame’s pass rush creates an even tougher assignment.
If UNC wants to remain competitive, its preferred strategy should be establishing Hall rather than asking Edwards to throw repeatedly against the Irish defense.

Carr has become one of the country’s most efficient quarterbacks. His combination of accuracy and explosive passing gives Notre Dame a major advantage.
Young’s two-sack performance against Purdue showed how disruptive Notre Dame’s defensive front can be.
Hall gives UNC its best opportunity to control possession and keep Carr on the sideline.
Edwards must protect the football. One or two turnovers against Notre Dame could quickly turn this game into a blowout.
Notre Dame needs to stop Hall and force UNC into third-and-long situations, allowing its pass rush to attack Edwards.
Offensively, the Irish should stay balanced and avoid giving North Carolina momentum through turnovers.
UNC needs long drives, a productive running game and strong red-zone execution. The Tar Heels cannot afford field goals when Notre Dame is consistently producing touchdowns.
