Marshall opens Sun Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon with a difficult trip to Harrisonburg to face undefeated James Madison at Bridgeforth Stadium.
Marshall enters 3-1 after surviving Gardner-Webb 36-35, while James Madison improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the Sun Belt with a convincing 46-20 road victory over Old Dominion.
James Madison is an 18.5-point home favorite, but Marshall’s improving offense gives the Thundering Herd a chance to make this an entertaining conference matchup.

Marshall leads the all-time series 4-2, but James Madison won last season’s meeting 35-23 in Huntington. Saturday’s game is also JMU’s Family Weekend, and the school announced that no primary tickets remained available.
Marshall has won three straight since opening the season with a 45-0 loss at Penn State.
Those victories have all been close: 28-26 over Middle Tennessee, 30-24 at Missouri State and 36-35 against Gardner-Webb.
Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is coming off his best performance of the season.
Del Rio-Wilson threw for a career-high 386 yards and three touchdowns against Gardner-Webb, leading a late drive that set up Marshall’s game-winning field goal. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw caught seven passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Through four games, Del Rio-Wilson has thrown for 783 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while completing just over 69 percent of his passes.
The concern is defense.
Marshall is allowing 450.8 total yards and 32.5 points per game, including 296.3 passing yards per contest.
Those numbers are dangerous against an explosive James Madison offense.
James Madison has opened 4-0 with victories over Liberty, Wagner, San Diego State and Old Dominion.
The Dukes have scored 46 or more points twice while allowing only 49 total points through four games.
Quarterback Camden Coleman threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns against Old Dominion.
The bigger story may have been JMU’s defensive front.
James Madison recorded nine sacks against the Monarchs while holding Old Dominion to negative rushing yardage when sacks were included in the team total.
Running back George Pettaway also rushed for 110 yards on 16 carries. He enters Saturday with 291 rushing yards and four touchdowns through four games.
That balance makes JMU difficult to defend.
College player props vary by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Pettaway is coming off his first 100-yard performance of the season after rushing for 110 against Old Dominion.
Marshall is allowing 154.5 rushing yards per game, and James Madison should remain committed to the ground attack if it establishes an early lead.
Prediction: George Pettaway — 88 rushing yards
Turner-Bradshaw was outstanding against Gardner-Webb, producing 131 yards and two touchdowns.
He has approximately 300 receiving yards through four games and could see increased volume if Marshall falls behind and is forced to throw.
Prediction: Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw — 67 receiving yards
Del Rio-Wilson’s 386-yard performance was impressive, but his season average remains below 200 yards per game.
James Madison’s pass rush represents a completely different challenge after producing nine sacks against Old Dominion.
If JMU consistently pressures Del Rio-Wilson, Marshall may struggle to generate the same explosive passing plays.
Prediction: Carlos Del Rio-Wilson — 207 passing yards
This matchup favors the JMU offense.
Marshall just allowed 35 points and 458 yards to Gardner-Webb and has surrendered more than 450 yards per game overall.
James Madison scored 46 against Old Dominion and should create plenty of scoring opportunities at home.
Prediction: James Madison — 41 points
Pettaway gives the Dukes a physical rushing presence capable of controlling the game and keeping Marshall’s offense on the sideline.
Coleman threw four touchdown passes last week. Marshall’s struggles defending the pass create an opportunity for another productive afternoon.
Marshall needs Del Rio-Wilson to build on his career performance, but he must protect the football against an aggressive JMU pass rush.
Turner-Bradshaw’s explosiveness gives Marshall its best chance to generate quick scores.
James Madison needs to pressure Del Rio-Wilson and prevent Marshall’s passing game from creating explosive plays.
Offensively, JMU should attack a Marshall defense that has struggled against both the run and pass.
Marshall must protect its quarterback, avoid turnovers and find a way to slow Pettaway. The Herd also cannot afford another defensive performance like the one against Gardner-Webb.
Marshall’s three-game winning streak deserves respect, but all three victories have come by one possession.
James Madison has looked considerably more complete.
The Dukes own home-field advantage, a powerful rushing attack and a defense capable of creating consistent pressure.
Marshall should generate some offense, particularly through Turner-Bradshaw, but keeping pace for four quarters will be difficult.
Marshall stays competitive early, but James Madison’s depth eventually becomes the difference.
Pettaway controls the ground game, Coleman attacks Marshall’s vulnerable secondary and the JMU pass rush creates multiple negative plays.
