Louisville hits the road Saturday afternoon for an important ACC matchup against NC State at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Both teams enter 2-2, but they arrive from opposite directions. Louisville is trying to rebound from a frustrating 30-27 home loss to Wake Forest, while NC State defeated Appalachian State 41-31 behind a balanced offensive attack.
Louisville enters as a 5.5-point road favorite in a matchup that could produce plenty of offense.
Matchup: Louisville Cardinals at NC State Wolfpack Date: Saturday, October 3, 2026 Kickoff: 3:30 PM ETTV: ACC Network Venue: Carter-Finley Stadium — Raleigh, North Carolina Tickets: As low as $84 Point Spread: Louisville -5.5 Over/Under: 58.5
Louisville leads the all-time series 9-4 and has won the last two meetings, including a 13-10 victory at NC State in 2023.
Louisville’s 2-2 record doesn’t tell the entire story.
The Cardinals’ two losses have come by three points each: 41-38 against Ole Miss and 30-27 against Wake Forest. In between, Louisville crushed Villanova 59-13 and defeated ranked SMU 41-31.
Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz continues to produce big numbers.
Against Wake Forest, Kienholz completed 27 of 36 passes for 324 yards and a touchdown while adding two rushing touchdowns. Through four games, he has thrown for more than 1,100 yards and has also become a significant red-zone threat with his legs.
The concern is Louisville’s inconsistency.
The Cardinals rushed for only 75 yards against Wake Forest after producing at least 260 rushing yards in each of their previous two games. Louisville also committed 90 yards in penalties.
Jeff Brohm needs a cleaner performance on the road.
NC State improved to 2-2 with an impressive offensive performance against Appalachian State.
The Wolfpack produced 459 total yards, including 206 rushing and 253 passing, while converting 11 of 17 third-down opportunities.
Quarterback CJ Bailey threw for 253 yards, while running back Jayden “Duke” Scott rushed for 148 yards and helped NC State regain the lead in the fourth quarter.
Bailey entered Week 4 completing nearly 65 percent of his passes, while NC State’s offense was already averaging more than 449 yards per game through its first three contests.
The biggest concern is defensively.
Appalachian State threw for 317 yards and scored 31 points. That becomes dangerous against a Louisville offense capable of generating explosive passes at any moment.
College player props vary by sportsbook, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Kienholz has already produced 300-yard performances against Ole Miss and Wake Forest.
NC State allowed Appalachian State quarterback Malachi Singleton to throw for 317 yards last week.
With Louisville expected to attack vertically, Kienholz should again receive plenty of opportunities.
Prediction: Lincoln Kienholz — 301 passing yards
Bailey is coming off a 253-yard performance against Appalachian State.
Louisville allowed Wake Forest to produce 402 total yards, and the Cardinals have been vulnerable to explosive plays.
If Louisville scores early, NC State may have to put more responsibility on Bailey.
Prediction: CJ Bailey — 247 passing yards
Scott was outstanding against Appalachian State, rushing for 148 yards.
Louisville allowed Wake Forest to rush for 177 yards, while the Cardinals managed only 75 themselves.
NC State should continue feeding Scott if the game remains close.
Prediction: Jayden Scott — 84 rushing yards
Louisville has already scored 38 against Ole Miss, 59 against Villanova and 41 against SMU.
NC State just surrendered 31 points and 379 yards to Appalachian State.
The Cardinals possess enough explosive-play ability to reach the 30s again.
Prediction: Louisville — 35 points
Kienholz can hurt defenses with both his arm and legs. He has already rushed for six touchdowns through four games, giving Louisville another weapon near the goal line.
Brown rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns against SMU. Louisville needs him to rebound after the entire running game struggled against Wake Forest.
Bailey must protect the football and match Louisville’s explosive passing attack. If this becomes a shootout, NC State will need him to make plays downfield.
Scott’s 148-yard performance against Appalachian State gives the Wolfpack an offensive formula that could keep Louisville’s offense on the sideline.
Louisville must eliminate penalties and reestablish its running game. The Cardinals cannot rely on Kienholz to carry the entire offense every week.
Defensively, Louisville has to prevent the explosive plays that hurt it against Wake Forest.
NC State needs to establish Scott early, control possession and make Louisville defend long drives.
The Wolfpack secondary is also critical. Allowing Kienholz time to attack downfield could turn this game into a track meet.
This matchup has the ingredients for one of the ACC’s more entertaining games of the weekend.
NC State has home-field advantage and enough offensive balance to challenge Louisville, but the Cardinals have demonstrated more explosive scoring potential.
Louisville’s two losses have come by a combined six points against quality competition.
If the Cardinals clean up the penalties and get more production from their running game, they should eventually create separation.
The 58.5 total also looks reachable considering both quarterbacks’ ability to generate yardage.
NC State keeps this competitive behind Bailey and Scott, especially in front of a difficult Carter-Finley crowd.
But Louisville’s passing attack provides the difference.
Kienholz creates several explosive plays, and the Cardinals bounce back from the Wake Forest loss with an important ACC road victory.
