Western Kentucky finally gets to play in front of its home crowd Saturday night when the Hilltoppers welcome Mercyhurst to Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
WKU enters 0-3, but that record needs context. The Hilltoppers have played their first three games on the road, including consecutive matchups against No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Indiana. Mercyhurst is 1-3 after earning its first victory with a 49-20 win over Glenville State.
Saturday marks the first football meeting between Western Kentucky and Mercyhurst and gives the Hilltoppers an opportunity to reset before beginning Conference USA play.

The game is WKU’s home opener and is also designated as a White Out and Parent & Family Weekend.
Mercyhurst’s season began with a brutal stretch that included Youngstown State, New Mexico State and New Mexico. The Lakers lost those three games by a combined 164-31 before responding with their 49-20 victory over Glenville State.
Mercyhurst forced five turnovers in that victory, including three interceptions, demonstrating how dangerous the Lakers can become when their defense creates short fields.
Offensively, Alex Gevaudan leads the passing game with 538 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Jameir Gamble has 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Dylan Evans leads the receiving corps with 202 yards and two scores.
The problem has been consistency. Mercyhurst is averaging only 241 yards per game while allowing almost 493.
Against an FBS opponent looking for its first victory, avoiding turnovers and preventing explosive plays will be essential.
Few teams have faced a tougher opening schedule.
WKU lost 49-14 at Nevada, 70-20 at Georgia and 38-0 at defending national champion Indiana. The Hilltoppers are averaging only 11.3 points and 259.3 yards per game, but their opposition has been dramatically stronger than what they will face Saturday.
Quarterback Brock Glenn showed flashes against Georgia, passing for 84 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 70 yards and two scores. He followed that by passing for 120 yards and adding 30 rushing yards against Indiana.
Freshman receiver Jonathan Stafford Jr. caught a career-high six passes against Indiana, while CC Ezirim led the Hilltoppers with 30 receiving yards.
This is WKU’s opportunity to finally establish an offensive rhythm.
Player props may not be widely available for this matchup. These are target numbers based on current production and matchup.
Glenn has faced Georgia and Indiana in his last two appearances. Mercyhurst is allowing 268.5 passing yards per game, giving him a much better opportunity to attack downfield.
Gamble is Mercyhurst’s leading rusher and is coming off 76 yards against Glenville State. The Lakers will need him involved to keep WKU’s offense off the field.
Mercyhurst has surrendered 14 rushing touchdowns in four games. WKU should have opportunities to establish the run and finish drives on the ground.
Evans is averaging 50.5 receiving yards per game and remains Mercyhurst’s most productive receiving option.
Alex Gevaudan: The Lakers need efficient quarterback play and cannot afford interceptions against an FBS opponent.
Jameir Gamble: Establishing the run would help Mercyhurst shorten the game.
Dylan Evans: Evans gives Mercyhurst its most consistent receiving threat.
Brock Glenn: This matchup provides Glenn an opportunity to build confidence after consecutive games against Top-5 opponents.
Jonathan Stafford Jr.: The freshman is coming off six catches against Indiana and could see his role continue to expand.
Jaylen Wester: The veteran linebacker forced two fumbles against Georgia and remains one of WKU’s defensive playmakers.
Create Turnovers: Five takeaways helped transform last week’s game.
Protect Gevaudan: Mercyhurst cannot allow WKU to dictate the game with pressure.
Stay Close Early: Falling behind by multiple touchdowns would make the Lakers one-dimensional.
Establish the Run: Mercyhurst is surrendering 224.3 rushing yards per game.
Protect the Football: WKU has already lost four fumbles and thrown three interceptions.
Start Fast: After three difficult road games, WKU needs to give its home crowd something to celebrate immediately.
Western Kentucky’s 0-3 record is ugly, but the Hilltoppers have faced Nevada, Georgia and Indiana without playing a home game.
This represents a completely different level of matchup.
Mercyhurst gained confidence with its first victory, but the Lakers have surrendered 46 points and nearly 493 yards per game.
Expect WKU to lean on its physical advantage, establish the running game and give Glenn opportunities to attack a vulnerable secondary.
Mercyhurst should create a few offensive plays, particularly through Gevaudan and Evans, but WKU’s depth and overall athleticism should become increasingly apparent.
The Hilltoppers finally get a favorable matchup and their first home game of the season.
Expect WKU to take control before halftime and pull away comfortably.
Western Kentucky 42, Mercyhurst 17
