Kansas State enters as the road favorite, but Cincinnati has already shown it can run the football, create explosive plays and respond when facing adversity.
Matchup: Kansas State Wildcats at Cincinnati Bearcats Date: Saturday, September 26, 2026 Time: 7:00 PM ET TV: ESPN2 Location: Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio Tickets: As low as $53 Betting Line: Kansas State -6.5 Over/Under: 55.5
The schools have confirmed the 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2. Cincinnati leads the all-time series 4-3, while Kansas State won the most recent meeting 41-15 in 2024.
Kansas State has been impressive on both sides of the football.
The Wildcats are averaging more than 45 points per game while allowing fewer than 10. Their defense has held all three opponents below 300 yards and entered the week ranked second nationally in total defense at 182.7 yards allowed per game.
Quarterback Avery Johnson remains the centerpiece.
Johnson has 618 passing yards and leads Kansas State with 253 rushing yards. Against Tulane, he became the first player in school history to pass for at least 200 yards and rush for at least 150 in the same game, finishing with 227 through the air and 152 on the ground.
Receiver Jaron Tibbs is coming off a career performance with nine catches for 114 yards against Tulane.
Kansas State’s ability to combine Johnson’s mobility with multiple rushing options makes the Wildcats difficult to defend.
Cincinnati has also started 3-0, but the Bearcats had to show some resilience last week.
Miami jumped ahead 28-7 before Cincinnati stormed back for a 35-31 victory. The Bearcats outscored Miami 28-3 in the second half, with Cole Tabb scoring the winning touchdown on a 53-yard run.
Quarterback JC French IV threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score.
French has proven to be a dual-threat weapon throughout the season. In his Cincinnati debut against Boston College, he rushed for three touchdowns while the Bearcats produced 254 yards on the ground.
Cincinnati’s offensive line may be its biggest strength. The Bearcats rushed for 418 yards against Western Carolina after producing 254 against Boston College.
That matchup against Kansas State’s excellent front could determine the game.
College player props vary by sportsbook, so these are target numbers based on current production.
Johnson’s legs remain one of Kansas State’s greatest weapons. Cincinnati must account for designed runs and scrambles throughout the night.
French showed against Miami that Cincinnati can lean on its passing game when necessary. Facing Kansas State’s explosive offense could increase his volume.
Tibbs enters with 162 receiving yards and appears to be developing into Johnson’s most reliable target.
Tabb scored three times against Miami and has become an important part of Cincinnati’s red-zone and short-yardage offense.
Avery Johnson: Cincinnati must contain his running ability without giving him easy throws downfield.
Jaron Tibbs: His breakout game against Tulane gives Kansas State another dangerous option.
Rodney Fields Jr.: Fields opened the season with consecutive 100-yard rushing games and provides additional balance.
JC French IV: His ability to create with both his arm and legs is central to Cincinnati’s upset chances.
Cole Tabb: Tabb’s versatility was critical during the comeback against Miami.
Antwan Peek Jr.: Peek recorded nine tackles and two forced fumbles against Miami, including the strip sack that sealed the victory.
Contain Cincinnati’s Run Game: The Bearcats have already produced games of 254 and 418 rushing yards.
Let Johnson Create: His dual-threat ability can stress Cincinnati horizontally and vertically.
Win Early Downs: Kansas State ranks among the nation’s best defenses and can make life difficult if Cincinnati repeatedly faces third-and-long.
Protect French: Kansas State leads the Big 12 with 30 tackles for loss.
Run the Football: Cincinnati’s offensive line must create enough success to keep Kansas State from attacking French every snap.
Use Nippert: Cincinnati is 2-0 at home and has been especially successful in night games at Nippert.
Kansas State deserves to be favored.
The Wildcats have been dominant defensively, Johnson is coming off one of the best performances of his career, and Kansas State has scored at least 31 points in every game.
But 6.5 points feels substantial at Nippert Stadium.
Cincinnati is averaging nearly 44 points per game and has already demonstrated it can win with the rushing attack or through French’s arm.
Kansas State’s defense should eventually create the difference, but Cincinnati has enough offensive balance to keep this close into the fourth quarter.
Expect a physical game built around two dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks and productive rushing attacks.
Cincinnati’s home-field advantage keeps the Bearcats within striking distance, but Johnson produces one late scoring drive that allows Kansas State to escape Cincinnati unbeaten.
