MAC play begins Saturday afternoon when the Ball State Cardinals travel to Kent, Ohio, to face the Kent State Golden Flashes in a matchup between two 1-2 teams searching for momentum.
Both programs faced difficult nonconference schedules. Ball State suffered road losses to Ohio State and Liberty around a 41-17 victory over Stony Brook. Kent State lost 57-0 at South Carolina and 59-3 at Ohio State but defeated Wofford 36-15 in its home opener.
That makes Saturday’s conference opener important for two teams hoping to reset their seasons.

The Cardinals’ best offensive performance came against Stony Brook, when they produced 41 points, 226 rushing yards and 256 passing yards.
But consistency has been difficult.
Ball State managed only 261 total yards in last week’s 51-15 loss to Liberty. The Cardinals rushed for 168 yards but passed for just 93 while committing 11 penalties for 107 yards.
The encouraging part is that Kent State’s defense has also struggled. The Golden Flashes are allowing 448.3 total yards and 43.7 points per game, giving Luster an opportunity to get Ball State’s offense moving again.
Kent State has also struggled offensively, averaging only 13 points and 255.3 total yards per game.
Quarterback Dru DeShields has completed 34 of 60 passes for 351 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Kent State is averaging just 133.3 passing yards per game.
The Golden Flashes have been more effective on the ground, averaging 122 rushing yards per game.
Last week’s 59-3 loss at Ohio State was ugly statistically — Kent State managed only 134 total yards — but the defense did produce some encouraging moments. The Golden Flashes forced two turnovers and held Ohio State to just 1-of-8 on third down.
Returning home could be significant. Kent State’s only victory this season came at Dix Stadium, where it defeated Wofford 36-15.
Exact college player-prop availability varies by sportsbook. These are target numbers based on current production.
Luster averages 146 passing yards per game, but this is a favorable matchup. Kent State opponents have averaged 288 passing yards, giving Ball State opportunities to attack through the air.
DeShields has averaged only 117 passing yards, but Ball State has surrendered 276.3 passing yards per game. This represents a much more manageable matchup than Ohio State.
Luster’s mobility adds another dimension to Ball State’s offense, particularly near the goal line. The Cardinals need to use his legs more against a Kent State defense allowing 160.3 rushing yards per game.
Ball State has struggled against stronger competition, but Kent State’s defensive numbers create an opportunity for the Cardinals to produce one of their better offensive performances.
Keldric Luster: Ball State’s quarterback is the key to the entire offense. His ability to create both through the air and on the ground could determine the outcome.
Ball State Offensive Line: Liberty limited the Cardinals’ passing game and repeatedly put them behind schedule. Better protection is essential.
Cardinals Secondary: Ball State has already surrendered nine passing touchdowns and 276.3 passing yards per game.
Dru DeShields: This is an opportunity for DeShields to rebound after a difficult afternoon against Ohio State.
Brandon White: White led Kent State with 21 rushing yards against Ohio State and should have more room against Ball State.
Quan Rhodes-McKee: He recorded seven tackles and two tackles for loss against Ohio State and could play a major role in containing Ball State’s rushing attack.
Protect Luster: Ball State needs more consistency from its passing game.
Limit Penalties: Eleven penalties against Liberty repeatedly hurt drives.
Start Fast: Kent State has struggled when opponents establish early leads.
Run the Football: Ball State is surrendering more than 210 rushing yards per game.
Protect the Ball: Kent State quarterbacks have thrown four interceptions, and the team has lost three fumbles.
Use Home Field: The Golden Flashes are 1-0 at Dix Stadium and 0-2 on the road.
These teams are much closer than their losses to national powers might suggest.
Ball State has the slightly more productive offense, while Kent State owns home-field advantage and showed against Wofford that it can move the football against comparable competition.
The biggest matchup may be Kent State’s running game against a Ball State defense allowing 210.7 rushing yards per game.
Still, Ball State appears capable of producing enough offense to make this a four-quarter game.
Expect a much more competitive contest than either team’s recent blowout losses.
Kent State should find success running the football, but Ball State has the better opportunity to create explosive plays through Luster.
This feels like a game that could be decided in the final five minutes.
