The Holy War takes on enormous Big 12 and College Football Playoff significance Saturday when No. 7 BYU visits No. 3 Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Utah enters 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12 after beating Cincinnati 49-25. BYU is 7-1 and 4-1, rebounding from its first loss with a 27-20 victory over Arizona State.
Matchup: No. 7 BYU Cougars at No. 3 Utah Utes Date: Saturday, November 7, 2026 Kickoff: 12:00 PM ET Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium — Salt Lake City, Utah Tickets: As low as $478 Point Spread: Utah -5.5 Over/Under: 47.5
The Utah -5.5 spread means the Utes must win by six points or more to cover. If Utah wins 27-23, BYU +5.5 covers because the Cougars lost by only four. A 27-20 Utah victory would cover.
Because of the half-point, there is no possibility of a push.
BYU has won the last three meetings, including a 24-21 victory in 2025, adding even more intensity to one of college football’s best rivalries.
Utah has developed into one of the most complete teams in the country.
The Utes average 38.9 points and 485.4 total yards per game, including 226.9 rushing yards. Defensively, they allow only 15.9 points and 330.4 yards.
Quarterback Devon Dampier was outstanding against Cincinnati, completing 22 of 29 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns while adding 45 rushing yards. Utah scored 42 first-half points and finished with 534 total yards.
Dampier has thrown for 1,876 yards, while Wayshawn Parker leads Utah with 726 rushing yards. Braden Pegan is the team’s leading receiver with 505 yards.
Utah’s defense can also change games with turnovers. Against Cincinnati, the Utes scored on both an interception return and a fumble return.
That combination of offensive balance and opportunistic defense makes Utah extremely difficult to beat at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
BYU’s season has been nearly as impressive.
The Cougars are 7-1, with their only defeat coming in a 39-31 double-overtime loss at UCF. They also own a major victory over then-No. 2 Notre Dame.
Quarterback Bear Bachmeier is the key to BYU’s upset hopes.
He threw for 236 yards and one touchdown against Arizona State. Earlier this season, Bachmeier produced 329 passing yards and 109 rushing yards against Iowa State and showed against Notre Dame that he can handle a high-pressure environment.
Freshman receiver Legend Glasker gives BYU an explosive downfield weapon. His 53-yard reception late against Arizona State helped set up the decisive touchdown.
The concern is the running game. BYU managed only 47 rushing yards against Arizona State, and Utah allows just over 100 rushing yards per game.
If the Cougars become one-dimensional, Utah’s defense can put enormous pressure on Bachmeier.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook and jurisdiction, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Dampier is coming off a three-touchdown performance and continues to benefit from Utah’s strong running game creating favorable passing situations.
Prediction: Devon Dampier — 252 passing yards
Utah’s run defense could force BYU to lean more heavily on Bachmeier, especially if the Utes build an early lead.
Prediction: Bear Bachmeier — 228 passing yards
Utah should continue using Parker to control possession and keep BYU’s offense off the field.
Prediction: Wayshawn Parker — 91 rushing yards
Glasker’s big-play ability could become essential if BYU struggles to run consistently.
Prediction: Legend Glasker — 67 receiving yards
Devon Dampier — Utah: His dual-threat ability makes him the most difficult player in the matchup to contain.
Wayshawn Parker — Utah: Parker gives Utah the physical rushing attack needed to control the tempo.
Bear Bachmeier — BYU: BYU’s upset chances depend heavily on Bachmeier creating plays without committing costly turnovers.
Legend Glasker — BYU: Glasker gives the Cougars the explosive receiving threat needed to challenge Utah vertically.
BYU must rediscover its rushing attack. Producing only 47 yards on the ground against Arizona State will not be enough against Utah.
Utah must pressure Bachmeier while keeping him contained in the pocket. His ability to scramble makes broken plays dangerous.
Third downs also favor Utah. The Utes have been one of the nation’s more efficient third-down offenses while consistently getting opponents off the field.
Turnovers could be decisive. Rivalry games often come down to field position, and Utah has shown the ability to turn takeaways directly into points.
The Utah -5.5 spread requires the Utes to win by at least six points.
BYU has won three straight in the rivalry and owns a major victory over Notre Dame, so the Cougars should not be dismissed.
Still, Utah enters undefeated, owns the stronger rushing attack and has the benefit of playing at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The 47.5 total points toward a defensive battle. Utah allows fewer than 16 points per game, while BYU has also consistently limited opponents.
BYU keeps the Holy War competitive behind Bachmeier, but Utah’s balance becomes the difference.
Dampier makes enough plays through the air, Parker controls stretches of the game on the ground and Utah’s defense prevents BYU from consistently establishing its rushing attack.
