One of college football’s fiercest rivalries returns Saturday night when the Michigan State Spartans visit the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
Michigan enters 5-3 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play after defeating Rutgers 28-21. Michigan State is 2-6 and 0-5 in the conference, has lost six consecutive games and is coming off a bye after a 28-10 loss at No. 9 UCLA.
Michigan enters as a 12.5-point favorite in a matchup carrying a remarkably low total of 39.5.
Matchup: Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines Date: Saturday, November 7, 2026 Kickoff: 7:30 PM ET TV/Streaming: Peacock Venue: Michigan Stadium — Ann Arbor, Michigan Tickets: As low as $105 Point Spread: Michigan -12.5 Over/Under: 39.5
The Michigan -12.5 spread means the Wolverines must win by 13 points or more to cover. If Michigan wins 24-14, Michigan State +12.5 covers because the Spartans lost by only 10. If Michigan wins 24-10, the Wolverines cover by 14.
Because of the half-point, there is no possibility of a push.
Michigan leads the overall rivalry 75-38-5 and the Paul Bunyan Trophy series 42-29-2.
Michigan’s formula remains straightforward: play elite defense, control possession and avoid asking the offense to win a shootout.
The Wolverines allow only 16.4 points and 250 total yards per game. Opponents average just 99.4 rushing yards and 150.6 passing yards, giving Michigan one of the strongest defensive profiles in the Big Ten.
That defense could create serious problems for Michigan State.
Michigan also received an encouraging performance from freshman quarterback Tommy Carr against Rutgers. In his second career start, Carr completed 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards, rushed for 54 yards and accounted for three touchdowns. His 81-percent completion rate was the highest single-game mark ever by a Michigan freshman starting quarterback with at least 20 attempts.
Running back Savion Hiter added 80 rushing yards, while JJ Buchanan caught another touchdown. Buchanan entered the Rutgers game leading Michigan with 539 receiving yards.
Carr’s emergence gives Michigan something it badly needed: a passing threat capable of complementing its defense and running game.
Michigan State’s biggest problem has been sustaining offense against quality competition.
The Spartans average only 19.9 points and 291.4 total yards per game, including 181.3 passing and 110.1 rushing yards. They have scored 13 points or fewer in four of their six losses.
Their last game demonstrated those difficulties.
UCLA held Michigan State to 156 total yards, 47 rushing yards and 11 first downs. The Spartans converted only two of 11 third downs and turned the football over three times.
Quarterback Alessio Milivojevic remains Michigan State’s season passing leader with 1,263 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions, although freshman Kayd Coffman started against UCLA and Leo Hannan also played.
That quarterback uncertainty becomes even more problematic against Michigan’s defense.
The Spartans need their offensive line and running game to produce significantly more than they did against UCLA. Falling into repeated third-and-long situations at Michigan Stadium would allow the Wolverines’ defense to dictate the game.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook and jurisdiction, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Carr looked composed in his second start and completed 22 of 27 passes against Rutgers.
Michigan does not need him throwing 40 times, but another efficient performance should put 200 yards within reach.
Prediction: Tommy Carr — 221 passing yards
Hiter rushed for 80 yards on 20 attempts against Rutgers.
If Michigan plays from ahead, the Wolverines should emphasize their rushing attack throughout the second half.
Prediction: Savion Hiter — 76 rushing yards
Buchanan has become one of Michigan’s most dependable targets and scored again against Rutgers.
Carr’s improving confidence makes Buchanan an appealing receiving target.
Prediction: JJ Buchanan — 64 receiving yards
Michigan State has struggled to create explosive offense, while Michigan allows only 250 yards per game.
The matchup strongly favors the Wolverines’ defense.
Prediction: Michigan State — 10 points
Tommy Carr — Michigan: His performance against Rutgers changed the outlook of Michigan’s offense. Another efficient game would make the Wolverines difficult to upset.
JJ Buchanan — Michigan: Buchanan gives Carr a reliable target and leads Michigan’s receiving corps.
Savion Hiter — Michigan: Expect Hiter to become increasingly important if Michigan establishes an early lead.
Michigan State quarterbacks: Whether the Spartans turn to Milivojevic, Coffman or Hannan, protecting the football against Michigan’s defense will be essential.
Michigan should make Michigan State prove it can consistently throw the football. The Wolverines’ defense allows only 150.6 passing yards per game and has held opponents without a completed second-half pass in each of its last two games.
Michigan State must find some success running the football. The Spartans average only 3.1 yards per carry, while Michigan allows just three yards per rushing attempt.
Third downs could also become decisive. Michigan converted 12 of 16 against Rutgers, while Michigan State managed just two of 11 against UCLA.
The Michigan -12.5 spread requires the Wolverines to win by at least 13.
That’s a large number in a rivalry game, but Michigan State enters on a six-game losing streak and has failed to score more than 13 points in four of those defeats.
Michigan’s defense should control this matchup, and Carr’s performance against Rutgers gives the Wolverines enough offensive upside to create separation.
The 39.5 total is extremely low, but the under still deserves consideration. Michigan’s defense has been outstanding, while Michigan State has struggled to consistently reach the end zone.
Michigan State’s rivalry intensity should keep the game competitive early, but the Spartans’ offensive limitations become increasingly difficult to overcome.
Michigan controls field position, Carr makes enough plays through the air and the Wolverines lean on their running game after halftime.
The Michigan defense does the rest.
