Midweek MACtion continues Wednesday night when the Ball State Cardinals visit the Massachusetts Minutemen at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
Ball State enters 3-5 overall and 2-2 in MAC play after consecutive victories over Bowling Green and Sacramento State. Massachusetts is 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the MAC, but the Minutemen have lost four straight after opening the season 4-0.
Massachusetts is favored by 3.5 points, while the total is set at 49.5.
Matchup: Ball State Cardinals at Massachusetts Minutemen Date: Wednesday, November 4, 2026 Kickoff: 7:00 PM ET TV: ESPNU Venue: Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium — Amherst, Massachusetts Tickets: As low as $19 Point Spread: Massachusetts -3.5 Over/Under: 49.5
The Massachusetts -3.5 spread means the Minutemen must win by four points or more to cover.
If UMass wins 27-24, Ball State +3.5 covers because the Cardinals lost by only three. A 28-24 Massachusetts victory would cover the spread. Since the number includes a half-point, there is no possibility of a push.
Ball State enters Amherst with momentum after back-to-back victories.
The Cardinals beat Bowling Green 32-31 in overtime before defeating Sacramento State 34-17. Ball State generated 417 total yards against Sacramento State, including 183 on the ground.
Quarterback Keldric Luster has become the centerpiece of the offense.
Luster threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns against Sacramento State while adding 68 rushing yards and another score. That came one week after he produced 195 passing yards and 125 rushing yards in the overtime victory at Bowling Green.
For the season, Luster has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,300 yards and nine touchdowns. Ball State averages 337.5 total yards per game.
Running back TJ Horton has also become a major red-zone weapon. Horton scored twice against Sacramento State and entered this matchup with a conference-leading nine rushing touchdowns.
UMass started the season 4-0 with wins over Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Stonehill and Sacramento State, but its season has changed dramatically since MAC competition intensified.
The Minutemen have lost four consecutive games to Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Buffalo and UConn. Their most recent defeat was a 35-16 loss at UConn.
Quarterback William “Pop” Watson III returned from injury against UConn after missing two games. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 205 yards and one touchdown.
The larger problem was balance. UMass managed only 15 rushing yards from its leading rusher in the UConn game, forcing Watson into a heavy passing workload.
Returning home should help. The Minutemen are 2-2 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium this season and came within one point of beating Miami (OH) there earlier in October.
This series is tied 2-2 all-time, with Wednesday marking the first meeting since Ball State defeated UMass 20-10 in 2015.
College player-prop availability varies by sportsbook and jurisdiction, so these are target numbers to consider if offered near these ranges.
Luster has become increasingly comfortable as Ball State’s offense has improved.
He threw for 234 yards against Sacramento State and should get enough opportunities to challenge 200 again.
Prediction: Keldric Luster — 228 passing yards
Luster’s mobility has changed Ball State’s offense.
He has rushed for 193 yards over his last two games, including 125 against Bowling Green.
Prediction: Keldric Luster — 61 rushing yards
Ball State allows 239.8 passing yards per game and has surrendered 19 passing touchdowns.
Watson should again carry a substantial portion of the UMass offense.
Prediction: Pop Watson — 217 passing yards
Horton has scored two rushing touchdowns in each of Ball State’s last two games and has become the Cardinals’ preferred option near the goal line.
Prediction: TJ Horton — Anytime Touchdown
Luster is the most important player in the matchup. His ability to create offense through both the air and on the ground has fueled Ball State’s two-game winning streak.
Horton’s touchdown production gives the Cardinals an efficient red-zone option.
UMass needs Watson to create explosive plays without putting the football in danger. His return gives the Minutemen their best chance to end the losing streak.
Ball State averages only 141.2 rushing yards per game overall, but Luster’s scrambling ability makes assignment discipline critical.
Massachusetts must slow Luster on designed runs and scrambles. Allowing him to repeatedly escape pressure could make Ball State difficult to stop.
Ball State must avoid defensive breakdowns. The Cardinals are allowing 422.9 total yards and 35.3 points per game, numbers that give UMass a realistic opportunity to rediscover its early-season offense.
Turnovers could also be decisive. Ball State has thrown only six interceptions this season, but Luster threw two against Sacramento State.
The Massachusetts -3.5 spread requires the Minutemen to win by at least four points.
UMass has home-field advantage and a healthier Watson, but its four-game losing streak is difficult to ignore. Ball State, meanwhile, enters with consecutive wins and an offense that has scored 66 points over its last two games.
That makes Ball State +3.5 attractive.
The 49.5 total also leans slightly toward the over. Ball State’s defense gives up plenty of yards, while the Cardinals’ offense has improved significantly behind Luster.
UMass ends its losing streak, but Ball State makes this a four-quarter game.
Watson produces enough through the air to move the Minutemen, while Luster’s dual-threat ability keeps the Cardinals within one possession.
Home field provides the deciding edge, but not enough for Massachusetts to cover.
