Texas walked into Week 8 at 4-2 with two straight losses, and the Longhorns still owned Saturday night. Ole Miss-Texas drew 8.1 million viewers on ABC, topping the list of most-watched college football games in Week 8, and the more telling number sits at the bottom of the same list. Miami, UCLA and Utah, the last three unbeaten teams in the country, drew 5.24 million viewers combined.
To be honest, the gap says more about how fans pick a game than any poll ever will. Texas was the most-watched team in the sport early this season, and the Longhorns still led the country at 8.398 million viewers per measured game through Week 7. A wounded Texas team with Arch Manning, the Longhorns’ quarterback, under center is still a better sell than a perfect record somewhere else.
Look at where those three games landed. Miami beat Pitt 52-23 at noon on ESPN and drew 1.84 million viewers, while LSU-Auburn drew 3.48 million in the same window on ABC. Utah’s comeback over Houston kicked off at 10:15 p.m. ET and drew 1.58 million, the smallest audience in the top 10, even though the Utes rallied for a 21-13 win in a ranked game.
UCLA had it worst of all. The Bruins moved to 7-0 against Michigan State on CBS at 3:30, the same slot that carried Texas A&M-Alabama, BYU-UCF and Tennessee-South Carolina. UCLA drew 1.82 million and finished last among the four afternoon games in the top 10.
Ironically, Miami put on the best individual show of the weekend. Malachi Toney, the Hurricanes’ star receiver, caught 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, and fewer than 2 million people watched it live. A performance like his on ABC in primetime would have been the talk of Sunday morning. Toney deserves a bigger stage than a noon cable game against Pitt, and the Hurricanes will need one if they want the country to notice what they have.
BYU tells the same story from the other side. The Cougars drew 9.16 million against Notre Dame one week earlier and then 4.74 million for a double-overtime loss at UCF, so the audience got cut nearly in half once the famous opponent was gone.
Meanwhile, Indiana keeps turning noon on FOX into appointment television. Indiana-Michigan drew 7.01 million, one week after Ohio State-Indiana pulled 10.38 million in the same window, the largest audience FOX has had all season.
Winning a first national title in January gave Indiana a national following, and the schedule did the rest, with back-to-back games against Ohio State and Michigan in the middle of October. Josh Hoover, the Indiana quarterback, ran in the overtime winner for the program’s first victory in Ann Arbor in 57 years, and both games were close, which is how a big audience stays put.
Funny enough, Indiana now draws like the blue bloods it keeps beating. A program that was a punchline for decades played in two of the most-watched college football games of October, taking the top spot in Week 7 and second in Week 8.
Week 7 was the first week since 2023, outside of Week 0 and Army-Navy week, in which neither of the two most-watched games featured an SEC team. The SEC answered right away, with four of the top six Week 8 games played between two SEC teams.
But the top of the chart cooled off. Week 7’s best game drew 10.38 million, and Week 8’s best drew 8.1 million, about what Alabama-Tennessee did as the third-biggest game the week before. Overall viewing is holding steady, too, with Mike Mulvihill, the FOX Sports executive who tracks the numbers, putting total college football viewing up 3% year over year through Week 7.
On top of that, ESPN and ABC landed three of the top five games, and all three of those aired on ABC. ABC is still the strongest home in the sport, and a cable slot at noon or late at night is where good teams go to get ignored.
Here is where the most-watched college football games of Week 8 leave us. Ranking and record get a team into the conversation, and the network, the window, and the opponent decide how many people actually watch. The college football TV ratings for Week 10 should test the idea, because Utah finally gets BYU on Nov. 7, and an unbeaten Utah team in a big window would show what the Utes can draw when somebody gives them the stage.
