Miami Football Is ACC Favorite After Missing the Title Game Last Season

Publish Date: 08/24/2026
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
Miami football enters 2026 favored in the ACC after missing Charlotte, adding Duke champion Darian Mensah while rebuilding its offense.

Miami football is the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC eight months after it failed to reach the conference title game. The Hurricanes finished 10-2 in the regular season and 6-2 in the ACC, then lost a five-team tiebreaker that sent Duke to Charlotte. Miami answered by winning three playoff games before Indiana stopped the run 27-21 in the national championship game. Now 165 of 188 ACC media voters picked Miami to win the league, while the AP placed the Hurricanes N0. 7 nationally. (with one first-place vote).

Miami Became the Tiebreaker Case Study

Duke reached the 2025 ACC Championship Game through the fifth tiebreaker, conference-opponent winning percentage, despite finishing 7-5 overall. Miami, Georgia Tech, Pitt and SMU also finished 6-2 in league play. The argument around the process changed when Miami beat Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss in the playoff, proving the team that missed Charlotte could survive three national elimination games. The old rule had produced a champion, but it had also produced an awkward question about what the conference was rewarding.

While Miami prepared to face Indiana, then-athletic director Dan Radakovich told ESPN what he wanted fixed. “We need to change our tiebreakers in the ACC.” The complaint had weight because Miami’s postseason run was unfolding at the same time. By July, the ACC had approved a new policy after testing more than 10,000 simulated seasons. Head-to-head results now carry the most weight, and the league says the model accounts for teams playing different numbers of conference games (the old five-team tie reached the fifth criterion).

Darian Mensah Makes Miami Football Shift Personal

Darian Mensah makes the contradiction harder to miss. He arrives at Miami with the ACC title the Hurricanes still do not have. At Duke last season, Mensah threw for 3,973 yards with 34 touchdowns and six interceptions, then completed 19 of 25 passes with two touchdowns in the 27-20 overtime win over Virginia for the conference championship. Duke later sued over his attempt to leave under a multiyear NIL agreement before the sides reached a settlement and cleared his transfer to Miami.

At ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, Mensah was repeatedly asked why he left the reigning league champion for the team that missed the title game. His answer went directly to Miami’s position.

“I want to compete for a national championship, and I think Miami was the spot to do that.” CBS Sports’ survey of more than 50 industry sources estimates Miami’s roster is well into the $40 million range (the figure is an industry estimate, not a school disclosure). Over here at the Grueling Truth, we did an examination of college football roster spending and explained why those numbers remain difficult to verify across the sport.

The ACC Problem Eventually Reaches the Line

The conference has another complication waiting in 2026. Miami plays nine ACC games, while Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina play eight during the transition to a nine-game model. Miami draws Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina anyway. The league says its new tiebreaker was designed to account for unequal conference-game totals, which makes last season’s controversy part of this season’s rulebook rather than an old argument

Once the discussion reaches the field, Miami’s advantage becomes less theoretical. The Hurricanes averaged 57.1 penalty yards per game last season, 85th nationally, and their offensive line committed 24 false starts, second-most in FBS (only one team had more).

Four starters from that line are gone. Sixth-year center Ryan Rodriguez now provides continuity while five-star freshman Jackson Cantwell pushes for a role. Cristobal acknowledged the gap after an August camp practice, telling reporters, “I see us having a lot of work to do.”

There is an older Miami echo here, although it only goes so far. By spring 2003, the Hurricanes had gone 66-10 in Big East play and won or shared seven league titles, including the 2001 national championship season.

The 2026 team is not preparing to leave the ACC, and one deep playoff run does not erase two decades without a conference crown. Still, the old Miami standard was national relevance first. Miami football has already reached college football’s final night without winning its league. The next test is whether it can handle the finer details well enough to finally win the one title still missing.
