LSU vs Ole Miss: Lane Kiffin Returns to Oxford

Publish Date: 09/18/2026
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
LSU football coach Lane Kiffin takes the field before his team's game against Louisiana Tech at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 12, 2026.

LSU vs Ole Miss has a reunion built into a top-10 SEC game, which is enough to keep Oxford busy all week. Lane Kiffin will walk back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium as LSU’s coach after six seasons at Ole Miss, and both teams will arrive 2-0. The noise around Kiffin is unavoidable, but the football underneath it is even more important here.

No. 7-ranked LSU opens SEC play after beating Clemson 51-10 and Louisiana Tech 45-14. No. 8-ranked Ole Miss beat No. 24 Louisville 41-38, then handled Charlotte 41-9. Ole Miss won this matchup 24-19 in Oxford last year, and College GameDay will return to the Grove for the first time since 2021. Both teams still have to snap the ball through the noise around this game.

LSU vs Ole Miss starts with familiar faces

Kiffin knows Ole Miss personnel, Pete Golding knows Kiffin’s habits, and both staffs understand the other building unusually well. Familiarity can help with tendencies and can tempt coaches into chasing clues that never come. Kiffin has pushed the attention toward his players.

Kiffin told reporters Monday that the return will draw attention, then reduced his own role to something simpler. “I’m not going to tackle anybody. I’m not going to throw any touchdowns.” It is a good line because it cuts through the reunion story. LSU still has to block, communicate, and protect the football in a stadium that will be waiting for the first mistake.

Ole Miss also has a defensive question that has been sitting on the calendar for weeks. Check out our feature explaining why the Ole Miss secondary had to come together before LSU arrived to get more context. Two games have given that rebuilt group useful work. LSU now brings an offense capable of testing communication vertically and after the catch. Saturday is the first serious conference check on that progress.

Ole Miss can punish LSU for giving away possessions

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt showed both sides of his game against Louisiana Tech. He pushed past 300 passing yards and set a career high, but LSU also gave the ball away four times in a game that stayed uncomfortable into the second half. The Tigers eventually pulled away 45-14 because the defense kept returning the offense to the field with room to recover.

Oxford is a poor place to test how many mistakes an offense can survive. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has thrown for 561 yards through two games, while Deuce Alexander has 235 receiving yards and Kewan Lucy has 148 on the ground. Those numbers are useful because Ole Miss can move the ball in more than one way. LSU cannot assume one bad possession will simply disappear into a 31-point win.

Golding said after the Charlotte win that Chambliss has taken control of the offense. “He’s got everyone’s attention in there. We want the ball in his hands.” LSU’s defense has looked fast through two weeks, but Chambliss gives Ole Miss a quarterback who can keep a broken play alive and turn a missed fit into a first down. His ability to extend plays becomes especially valuable if the crowd forces LSU into a long-yardage game.

The first SEC test should tell us something real

The SEC race is crowded, but a September loss does not end a season. A 2-1 team can recover under the expanded playoff. The better question is which program leaves Saturday with proof that its first two wins translate to conference football.

LSU has shown more raw force, especially in the Clemson opener. Ole Miss has shown it can recover from trouble after trailing Louisville and can spread the ball around Chambliss. The opinion here is simple enough. The team that handles the emotional first quarter without handing away field position will probably get the version of the game it wants.

Kiffin will hear plenty before kickoff, and Ole Miss will hear plenty about the coach who left. In LSU vs Ole Miss, the more revealing sound may be LSU’s offense hearing its own calls on third down while Ole Miss’ rebuilt secondary makes the same coverage call at the same speed. Those details can turn a reunion into an SEC result.
