LSU Offensive Line Could Decide Kiffin’s $50 Million Bet

Publish Date: 08/25/2026
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
LSU offensive line faces Clemson with only two returning starters as Lane Kiffin tests whether a costly transfer rebuild can become one front.

LSU may have assembled the most expensive roster in college football, but its offensive line still has to solve a problem money cannot hurry. CBS Sports surveyed more than 50 industry figures and found several who believed that Lane Kiffin’s first roster could exceed $50 million. Keep in mind that this isn’t an LSU disclosure. Jordan Seaton and Sam Leavitt arrived as top portal additions, while only two projected linemen started for LSU last season. The rebuild moved pretty quickly, but shared recognition up front takes repetitions that the portal cannot provide.

Kiffin Bought Talent Before LSU Could Buy Time

Kiffin attacked the portal because LSU finished 7-6 and required more than a simple cosmetic fix. CBS ranked the Tigers’ transfer class No. 1 and identified Seaton, Leavitt and Princewill Umanmielen among its seven-figure additions. If you want a useful baseline before deciding what all of that money bought, you’re better off checking our article on how LSU’s offensive line stacked up against the SEC in July, when the unit ranked eighth. The write-up also praised Seaton while warning that the interior still had to come together. Ole Miss made the price more literal by suing Umanmielen and reserve tackle Devin Harper for $950,000 combined in early-termination payments.

Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter explained the dispute to the Clarion-Ledger in July. “Contracts are with the players. LSU could pay that on behalf of the players. So we’re kind of exploring all of that right now.” LSU later declined, saying it was not a party to those contracts (Ole Miss is suing the players and not LSU). The episode makes player movement increasingly contractual without answering when five blockers recognize the same pressure.

The LSU Offensive Line Has Experience Without History

Seaton starts at left tackle after 22 games at Colorado. Aliou Bah brings 24 consecutive starts at right guard from Maryland, while Braelin Moore returns at center with 36 career starts. Weston Davis started 10 games for LSU last season. Bo Boredelon won the left-guard job after playing only 23 offensive snaps in 2025, although his one career start came in the 2024 Texas Bowl. The group is experienced, but most of that experience happened somewhere else or beside somebody else.

During August camp, reporters asked Seaton how the new group was learning to work together. He focused on the communication required when crowd noise takes away normal conversation. “I think that’s huge in a game where it’s a stadium of 110, 105, 100,000 at that.” SU needs those signals for protection calls and stunts. Boredelon can know his assignment, and Seaton can know his. The protection still fails if they see the movement differently.

Leavitt makes the timing urgent because he brings 4,652 career passing yards and a 2024 Big 12 title, but a foot injury ended his 2025 season after just seven games. Kiffin said before camp that Leavitt had returned to full strength. LSU averaged only 104 rushing yards per game last season at 3.6 yards per carry, which ranked last in the SEC. The line must protect Leavitt while also giving Kiffin a running game the previous offense never consistently found.

Clemson Gets the First Look at Kiffin’s Bet

Kiffin has seen progress without pretending the work is finished. Asked about the group during camp, he said, “The spring took a while for that, and they’re doing really well.” He has described the run game as further along than pass protection, while depth remains a concern (Moore and Davis are LSU’s only returning starters up front). The first unit looks settled, but September will show just how much that matters once defenders stop wearing the same practice colors.

Colorado offers Seaton a useful memory rather than a prediction. Deion Sanders imported 49 transfers before the 2023 season, opened 3-0 and finished 4-8 while Shedeur Sanders was sacked 52 times. Colorado rebuilt the line afterward, with Seaton arriving as the five-star centerpiece. LSU has more established line talent than that Colorado team, but the lesson travels. Protection problems follow high-priced quarterbacks and receivers into every snap, regardless of what the roster cost.

LSU hosts Clemson on September 5 with College GameDay in Baton Rouge on ABC. The LSU offensive line will enter Tiger Stadium with an All-American tackle, veteran transfers, and a center who has started three straight Power Five seasons. Seaton has already talked about silent communication because 100,000 people can make normal conversation meaningless. When Clemson starts moving bodies across the front, LSU’s expensive additions will depend on five linemen reaching the same answer without needing to hear it.
