Keldrick Luster leads Ball State past Stony Brook

Keldric Luster needed one week to make Ball State’s opener at Ohio State look like a different season. The senior quarterback completed 27 of 32 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns as the Cardinals beat Stony Brook 41-17 in their home opener, turning a game Ball State needed to stabilize into the first convincing performance of its new season.

The contrast with Columbus was immediate. Luster completed 18 of 33 passes for 89 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the 56-3 loss to Ohio State. As James Ernest noted in our Stony Brook at Ball State preview, the home opener gave Ball State a clear chance to reset after what happened in Columbus.Ā Against Stony Brook, he threw three touchdown passes before halftime and had Ball State ahead 21-3. The different opponent came with a completely different level of efficiency. Luster completed 84.4 percent of his throws and averaged eight yards per attempt while spreading the ball across the formation.

His first touchdown went three yards to Tate Hoover late in the first quarter. In the second, Luster found Jabari Smith for a 23-yard score and then hit Jalen Bonds from the same distance. Ball State did not need a desperate drive or a late correction. It controlled the game before halftime and made Stony Brook chase from there.

Ball State’s defense gave Luster time to build the lead, holding Stony Brook without a touchdown through three quarters and intercepting Quinn Boyd twice. The Cardinals also held the ball for 33:07, which kept the first-half control from becoming a short-lived burst; the win extended Ball State’s run of success in home openers to 16 victories in the last 17, giving Mike Uremovich’s team a much cleaner first impression in Muncie than it made in Columbus.

Keldric Luster Let Ball State Use the Rest of Its Offense

Luster’s best work also made the rest of Ball State’s offense easier to see. TJ Horton ran nine times for 125 yards and broke a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Bonds added 77 yards on six carries, including a 49-yard score. The Cardinals finished with 226 rushing yards and 482 total yards, a massive jump from the 165 total yards they managed at Ohio State.

Keldric Luster also distributed the ball rather than leaning on one receiver. Jabari Smith led Ball State with six catches for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Janarion McDougle added four catches for 52. The passing game created enough balance that Stony Brook could not simply crowd the line and make Ball State prove it could win outside.

There were still reminders that this is not a finished offense. Luster threw one interception, and Ball State committed 11 penalties for 99 yards. Those mistakes did not threaten the result because the Cardinals had built too much separation, but they become more expensive when the schedule tightens. That progress matters because Ball State’s 2026 offensive breakdown identified the quarterback as the offense’s biggest question entering the season.

The Reset Matters Before Another Road Game

Stony Brook cut into the margin with two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Jeremiah Coney, including a 66-yard run, but Ball State answered both times. Bonds scored from 49 yards, then Horton went 54 on the Cardinals’ next touchdown. The response kept the game from becoming uncomfortable and showed Ball State could finish with the same explosive balance it used to build the lead.

Keldric Luster leaves Week 2 with something the Ohio State game could never give him: proof that his offense can function through him for four quarters. Ball State is 1-1 and heads to Liberty next Saturday.

Liberty will test whether this version of Luster can travel.
