Iowa Depth Chart Changes Put Backfield Under Cy-Hawk Pressure

Iowa Depth Chart Changes Put Backfield Under Cy-Hawk Pressure

Iowa will play the Cy-Hawk game without L.J. Phillips Jr., and its Week 2 Iowa depth chart still lists Hank Brown OR Jeremy Hecklinski at quarterback. Kamari Moulton remains first at running back after a 183-yard opener, with Nathan McNeil OR Xavier Williams behind him. Iowa State now brings a new four-man front and a six-sack opener into Kinnick, putting the most important changes behind established players at running back and quarterback.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz ruled Phillips out for Saturday after the South Dakota transfer left the Northern Illinois game in the first quarter. Ferentz called him week to week, while outside reporting has identified the injury as a high ankle sprain. Phillips arrived after leading the FCS with 1,921 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns in 2025, so Iowa loses a proven option it expected to rotate behind Moulton.

L.J. Phillips’ Absence Changes Iowa’s Backfield Math

Moulton gave Iowa little reason to worry about the top of the running-back room. He ran for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries in the 40-0 win over Northern Illinois, including scores from 50 and 37 yards. Ferentz said Moulton looked faster, quicker, and more decisive as his confidence and experience have grown. Iowa has a clear answer at RB1. The uncertainty begins when he leaves the field.

McNeil rushed for 169 yards in nine games last season, while Williams ran for 285 yards at 5.8 per carry in 10 games. Neither found much room in Week 1, with McNeil gaining eight yards on seven carries and Williams eight on six. Ferentz said both need more game exposure. If we are looking for the real pressure point on this depth chart, it sits behind Moulton.

Phillips’ absence gives McNeil and Williams a clearer route into the rotation, and their value can show up without the ball. Protection recognition and timing matter whenever a backup stays in on a passing down. Iowa State gives those snaps a different test than Northern Illinois did.

Iowa State’s New Front Makes the Backfield Change Matter

First-year Iowa State coach Jimmy Rogers brought defensive coordinator Jesse Bobbit with him and shifted the Cyclones to a four-man front after years of a three-man structure. Iowa State immediately recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss in a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri. A year earlier, the Cyclones finished the entire season with 13 sacks. You can see why the Week 1 total matters here. Iowa State can test McNeil and Williams even when neither gets the carry.

Defensive end Isaac Terrell supplied three sacks, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry in his Iowa State debut while the Cyclones held Southeast Missouri to 1.5 yards per rush. Terrell followed Rogers and Bobbit from Washington State, and his edge pressure gives Iowa a direct reason to value backs who can protect as well as run.

Iowa Still Has an OR at Quarterback

The same pressure reaches Iowa’s unresolved quarterback competition. Brown and Hecklinski received five offensive series apiece against Northern Illinois. Brown’s five produced 27 points and 283 yards, while Hecklinski’s produced seven points and 154. The Week 2 chart still lists them together.

Ferentz said Tuesday that Iowa still has confidence in both quarterbacks and has continued splitting practice repetitions. The competition, he said, has not changed much after the opener. For us, the OR means more after five series apiece than it did on the preseason sheet. Iowa State can add another layer of evidence if its front forces quicker decisions and less comfortable pockets.

Tight End and Punt Return Changed for Different Reasons

The smaller depth-chart moves need less explanation. Iowa added Zach Ortwerth alongside Thomas Meyer on the second tight-end line, while DJ Vonnahme and Addison Ostrenga remain listed with an OR at the top. Iowa has not tied Ortwerth’s addition to one specific performance, so the chart confirms the change without inventing its cause.

The punt-return change has clearer evidence. Ferentz said Iowa planned to manage Zach Lutmer’s workload after he missed camp time. Evan James then returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown against Northern Illinois and now appears behind Reece Vander Zee, giving Iowa another return option capable of changing field position.

What the Iowa Depth Chart Means Against Iowa State

The personnel questions arrive in a rivalry Iowa State has won twice in a row and three times in the last four meetings, including the Cyclones’ last two trips to Iowa City. Saturday’s sold-out 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff is the first night Cy-Hawk game since 2016. Kinnick’s place among college football’s most intimidating stadiums matters when Iowa is rotating quarterbacks and expanding backup-back roles.

Moulton should remain the center of Iowa’s running game, but Phillips’ absence makes the snaps behind him more meaningful. McNeil and Williams now have a clearer path into the rotation against a six-sack front. Brown and Hecklinski are still likely to share work, giving offensive coordinator Tim Lester another chance to see how the offense handles pressure in a tighter game.

The market also expects a lower-scoring game. The Hawkeyes were roughly 14 to 14.5-point favorites Wednesday night, with totals around 40.5 to 41.5. Phillips’ absence does not explain either number by itself after Moulton’s 183-yard opener. Iowa simply has less proven room behind its lead back against a defense that opened by living in the opponent’s backfield.

Saturday may give Iowa answers it did not need against Northern Illinois. Ferentz is not pretending the quarterback choice is settled, and the backs behind Moulton now have their own competition for trust. He described the quarterback process this way: “I wish I had a blueprint or a formula, but I’m not sure there is one.”
