Indiana Football Schedule Reveals Curt Cignetti’s Real Program Blueprint

Winning a national title usually gives a program permission to schedule bigger. Indiana has treated 16-0 as proof that the opposite approach works. The Indiana football schedule lost its future Notre Dame series this month, then Curt Cignetti went on the Big Ten Network and said he still wanted the Irish, only on terms that would bring Notre Dame to Bloomington twice for every trip to South Bend.

“I’d like to play Notre Dame. They ought to come to our place twice, and we’ll go up there once, since they’re not in a conference. It’d be a great in-state game. I guess there’s a backstory to that,” Cignetti said.

Reports said Indiana requested cancellation of the 2030-31 home-and -home, so the timing invites the obvious accusation. Still, Cignetti’s position is more interesting than fear. Indiana has become good enough to ask why it should volunteer for another hard game when nine Big Ten games already decide so much.

The Indiana Football Schedule Has Followed This Logic Before

Cignetti made the argument before Indiana ever won the trophy. After the Hoosiers canceled a future series with Virginia in 2025, he told reporters at Big Ten Media Days that Indiana had added another home game while still playing nine league opponents.

“So we figured we would just adopt SEC scheduling philosophy, you know. Some people don’t like it. I’m more focused in on those nine conference games,” Cignetti said.

A year ago, the explanation sounded convenient. Now there is a ring behind it. Indiana beat Alabama 38-3, Oregon 56-22 and Miami 27-21 after conference play, finishing 16-0. The playoff supplied every heavyweight test September did not. (Those three postseason games ended with Indiana ahead by 75 combined points).

September Gives Indiana Time to Rebuild the Offense

The championship team sent a program-record eight players into the 2026 NFL Draft (six of whom came from offense). Fernando Mendoza went first overall, while Pat Coogan, Elijah Sarrat, Omar Cooper Jr., Riley Nowakowski and Kaelon Black also left that side of the ball.

Josh Hoover is replacing Mendoza, but “new quarterback” needs context. He threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns at TCU last season and arrives with 9,629 career passing yards. (Indiana lists Hoover as the active FBS leader in career passing yards). Carter Smith returns at left tackle with 41 consecutive starts, giving the line one piece that needs no introduction.

The first three games are North Texas, Howard, and Western Kentucky, before the tone changes. Indiana then goes to Rutgers and Nebraska before hosting Ohio State and traveling to Michigan on consecutive Saturdays (we’re expecting Ohio State and Michigan to arrive back-to-back in October). The Indiana football schedule gives Hoover a runway before the rebuilt offense reaches the part of the season that can turn ugly pretty fast.

While Cignetti can still control September, he cannot control the portal, the draft, or nine Big Ten games. There is some coldness in that reasoning, sure, but college football has made cold calculations normal.

Indiana Still Gives Something Up by Scheduling This Way

Kirby Smart offered the cleanest objection when Georgia opened camp. Asked about nonconference scheduling, he said that strong opponents matter beyond the playoff math.

“I do think the consumer matters. The consumer is the people that are coming to the games. They want to see exciting, competitive games,” Smart said.

Smart is right about the cost. Notre Dame in Bloomington would mean more to Indiana supporters than Howard ever could, and the schools have enough history and geography to make the game feel different before kickoff. Notre Dame’s independence has become less punishing in the expanded playoff, which makes Cignetti’s two-for-one suggestion feel like some needling mixed with real negotiating position.

Indiana’s choice remains defensible because the Big Ten schedule carries its own punishment. It is also less fun, and pretending otherwise would make the argument too easy.

North Texas comes first on September 5, then Howard and Western Kentucky. The soft opening will annoy most people right up until Indiana reaches Ohio State and Michigan in three straight weeks. Cignetti already proved his team can win the games everyone circles. His wager now is that a champion gains nothing by circling another one years in advance.
