No. 1 Georgia faces off against No. 11 LSU in the SEC championship match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, on Saturday.
The game time is set for 4 p.m. ET and will be televised by CBS.
Georgia (12-0) hopes to win back-to-back SEC championships. This would be the first time Georgia had won back-to-back SEC titles since 1980-82. The Bulldogs finished their second consecutive unbeaten regular season in the SEC East under Kirby Smart. This is their fifth time playing in the SEC title in the last six seasons.
The unexpected visitor, LSU (9-3) is on the other sideline. Brian Kelly, the Tigers’ first-year coach, led them to an unexpected SEC West Division championship. After a 38-23 defeat to Texas A&M, the Tigers were eliminated from the CFP hunt. However, a conference championship would have be a great building block.
This is the fifth time LSU and Georgia have met in the SEC championship match. In those matches, the Tigers are also 3-1. This is all you need to know about the matchup between Georgia & LSU.

Georgia is the king of college football. It boasts the talent advantages that opposing coaches only dream about. It is a Goliath that few can even imagine conquering. The Bulldogs rank in the top ten for total yards gained and in the top five for total yards allowed. The defense has allowed the least amount of points per game and is the best against the run. They are ranked in the top 25 of most statistical categories. However, the journey is not over.
Since their Oct. 1 close call against Missouri, the Bulldogs have not needed to win any one-score games; they are back to serving up butt-kickings. This was their only one-score match this season. How will UGA do in another tightly contested contest? We might never know. Georgia ranks first nationally for red zone conversion percentage (97%) as well as fifth for third down conversion percentage (51.4%). Its defense ranks first in red-zone defense (64%), and allows the third-fewest third down conversions (36%).
QB Stetson Weber leads the Bulldogs’ passing yards (3151), and has the nation’s seventh-highest QBR (84.9). Kenny McIntosh (64 rushing yards, 8 TDs) and Daijun Edwards (604 rushing yards and seven touchdowns) lead UGA in rushing. Kendall Milton also contributed 420 yards and six touchdowns on 64 carries. The Georgia receiving unit is led by tight end Brock Bowers (65 yards and 5 touchdowns) and wide receiver Ladd McConkey (606 yards and four touchdowns).
LSU won’t be intimidated by the Bulldogs. But can it win an unlikely SEC title over the defending national champions? This wouldn’t be the Tigers’ first attempt to throw a wrench into the championship picture. LSU’s win over Alabama, 32-31, knocked the Tide off their pedestal and gave head coach Brian Kelly his first Baton Rouge win.
Although the Bulldogs know that the Tigers won’t play with their food, is LSU so opportunistic as to send UGA home without its bone? LSU averages 32.5 points per game and 433.4 yards per match this season. This includes 191.8 on the ground and 241.6 through the air. It converted 49 of 55 red zone trips (89.1%), and 47.8% on its third-down attempts. This is the 13th-highest percentage of third-down conversions in the country.
Jayden Daniels, a transfer quarterback, leads the Tigers in total touchdowns (26), rushing yards (824), and passing yards (2.556 yards). Josh Williams is the junior running back and has contributed 481 yards on his 92 carries with six touchdowns. Malik Nabers is the sophomore wide receiver and has led the pass-catchers in receptions with 58 for 726 yards and one touchdown. Brian Thomas Jr. and Jaray Jenkins combined to have 638 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
LSU’s defense has surrendered 21.5 points and 346.8 yards per game. This includes 143.4 rush yards as well as 203.4 pass yards. This season, the Tigers have recorded 25 sacks and six interceptions. With 7.5 sacks, linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. leads pass-rushers. Six different Tigers have scored an INT.
Georgia is currently 6-6 ATS, but are 3-0 when they are under 20 points. This is why the huge point spread isn’t surprising. Smart has the Bulldogs 15-7 ATS in neutral site games.
Kelly has performed well in the role of underdog up to now. LSU is currently 3-1 S/U, 3-1 ATS as a underdog this season. The lone loss was against Tennessee on Oct. 8, which was a blowout of 40-13. Ole Miss was a pick-’em win for the Tigers.
LSU and Georgia have met only 10 times since 2003.
This matchup is hard to predict because of the high spread in conference championship games. The betting trends are telling the story.
Like last year, Georgia will likely be a finalist in the College Football Playoff regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s match. Kirby Smart will place the health and well-being of his team above all else. Although it is not a glamorous bet, betting Georgia vs LSU has great value.
If LSU is healthy, they’ll keep this game competitive. With the optimism surrounding Daniels’ health, I’ll back LSU to cover a 17.5 spread in a championship game. LSU has plenty of talent to keep this game close. Remember Georgia’s place in the CFP seems secure so expect this game to mean a lot more to LSU. I also like the under on the -51.5.

If you are betting on the Trojans to cover, the payoff will be solid, not great, and I think the Trojans will cover this game. For example, a few days before the game, the odds are averaging -110 if you are betting on the Trojans to cover. If you bet 100 on the Trojans -3, the payout would be around 91 dollars, which means you would get back the 100 you bet and the other 91 for winning the bet.
