Happy Valley Is Witnessing A Change As Sean Clifford Steps Down And Presumably, Drew Allar Takes Over As the new Leader.
Penn State football fans have high hopes that Drew Allar will step into Sean Clifford’s shoes as quarterback of their 2023 team and deliver on its offensive goals. Allar was once considered a five-star recruit and now faces immense expectations as one of Penn State’s premier recruits in 2022. The Nittany Lions seemed poised to challenge Ohio State and Michigan for Big ten supremacy and if Allar is the real deal the Nittany Lions have a real shot at a college football playoff berth.
โWeโve got a competition for the quarterback spot and Drew Allar is a young man that thereโs a lot of excitement about,โ Franklin said. โComing out of high school he was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the country, was our backup quarterback last year. And unusually he was able to play in almost every single game, so that was a real positive that we were able to get him a ton of reps and experience last year.โ
Allar Has Playing Experience Although still relatively young, Allar had plenty of playing experience during Penn State’s 2022 season as a freshman. Penn State often found itself in a commanding position against opponents, giving Allar valuable playing time. Even in his limited appearances, Allar demonstrated his potential, completing 35 of 60 passes for 344 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while also showing his mobility with 18 rushes covering 52 yards for one touchdown score.
Replacing an experienced quarterback like Clifford won’t be simple. Clifford led his team with 2,822 passing yards and 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions during 2022.
A supportive Cast will Be Crucial, and Penn State head coach James Franklin has stressed the importance of surrounding Allar with an equally supportive and capable team in order to create an environment in which he feels at ease in leading the offense. Both coaching staff and players have acknowledged that there will be an initial adjustment period as Allar adjusts to his starting position, but they have faith in him to make a significant impactful statement about Penn State football on and off the gridiron.
โI think a couple things. I think No. 1 weโve got a chance to be better on the O-line, weโve got a chance to be better at running back, weโve got a chance to be better at tight end,โ Franklin said. โWe have a question mark at wide receiver. I saw some things this spring to get excited about but not ready to stamp โem yet.
Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Joe Allar will face their truest test when their season opens this fall against WVU and Iowa before hosting Illinois and Northwestern before facing Ohio State at home on October 21st – this will provide Allar with an invaluable opportunity to demonstrate his talents, manage pressure effectively, and establish himself as leader of his team. Support from the coaching staff, as well as an exceptional roster, will enable Allar to meet high expectations placed upon him and lead Penn State towards an eventual College Football Playoff run in 2023.
