Dan Mullen’s UNLV Let an Early Playoff Opportunity Slip Away

College football games are sometimes decided by what happens near the goal line, and UNLV gave us a clean example Saturday night. The Rebels gained 460 yards, held the ball for more than 35 minutes, and led Memphis by seven three different times. They still lost 27-21 after scoring on only two of four red zone trips while Memphis converted all three of its chances. Dan Mullen had enough offenses to win. The problem was what NLV did with the opportunities that offenses created.

Mullen entered his second season after going 10-4 with a first-place Mountain West regular-season finish in 2025 and extending UNLV’s run of conference championship appearances to three straight seasons. The Rebels also opened 2026 receiving votes in both polls, while preseason SP+ simulations gave them a 7% chance to reach the playoff. Mullen had already framed Memphis accordingly at the first fall-camp practice on July 29,” You are going to be on national television in a game with playoff implications before the season even really starts.”

Jackson Arnold Gave UNLV Enough Offense to Win

Quarterback Jackson Arnold gave UNLV enough production to make quarterback play the wrong place to begin assigning blame. The Auburn transfer completed 25 of 38 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, then added 54 rushing yards and another score. UNLV finished with 23 first downs and no lost turnovers. Put 460 yards beside 21 points, and we have to stop treating offense as the solution.

The quarterback numbers make what happened after UNLV reached scoring position more important. The Rebels went 3 of 15 on third down and 2 of 5 on fourth down, missed their only field goal attempt, and left two red zone trips without points. Mullen went directly to the problem afterward. “The game came down to red zone scoring, which is a huge part of playing to win,” he said. UNLV repeatedly moved the ball far enough to threaten Memphis, but failed to finish drives once third downs, fourth downs and the red zone became decisive.

Those missed chances became harder to recover once Memphis’s defensive front started winning more often. Defensive lineman Elijah Kinsler recorded 2.5 of the Tigers’ six sacks, all six coming after halftime. Starting center Austin Boyd left with 8:11 remaining, taking one of UNLV’s most experienced linemen while the pressure was already building up. The Rebels gained minus-14 yards over their final 11 offensive plays and allowed four sacks after Boyd exited. His injury made a developing problem worse rather than creating it.

Memphis Took the Head-to-Head Result UNLV Wanted

The protection problems explain how UNLV lost the lead. Memphis’s place in the national race explains why the loss may last longer. The 2026 playoff gives automatic places to the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC champions, plus the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, or Sun Belt. Seven more teams receive larger bids. Let’s keep the damage in proportion. UNLV lost ground in the comparison, not access to the playoff itself.

Head-to-head results are one factor the CFP committee can use when separating comparable teams. If UNLV and Memphis remain in the same neighborhood in December, the Tigers now own the result between them. First-year Memphis coach Charles Huff understood the value immediately, calling the win “a national statement.” Mullen had described the matchup as an early playoff game before the season started. Huff left Las Vegas with the result that allowed Memphis to talk about it nationally.

Hawaii Gives UNLV an Immediate Chance to Respond

UNLV does not have much time to sit with the difference. Mountain West play opens at Hawaii on Sept 5, followed by road games at North Texas and Akron before Cal visits Allgiant Stadium. North Dakota State’s move to FBS has also added another nationally relevant test to the schedule, and the Bison come to Las Vegas on Oct 10 after opening their new era with a 33-7 win.

The remaining schedule gives UNLV enough time to recover, but Memphis removed one of its cleanest chances to beat another playoff contender directly. Mullen said afterward that there are “some areas that we have to take some big steps forward” with new faces in the lineup. Hawaii gets the first look at which steps UNLV actually took.
