Week 9 saw big wins by USC, Georgia, Iowa, Oregon, Texas Tech, along with several drama filled games like Miami/UNC and Indiana/Minnesota. Week 10 is a blockbuster on paper with important marquee matchups across the board. 7 ranked versus ranked tilts is a great start in making this November something to remember. The first College Football Playoff Rankings had some glaring questions like why is Alabama ranked so high? Lucky for us, most of this stuff will play itself out on the field.
#1 Miami vs. #11 Notre Dame: Stud Miami WR Malachi Toney is out for this highly important rivalry hence the point spread rising. Notre Dame is missing a few key players on defense, so will that make up for the impact Toney has on Miami’s offense? We know the Canes can score leading the country in touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Miami’s defense has given up far too many yards and points in recent weeks. The Irish must win this game given their rankings slot in the first week of the rankings. Home field advantage and a desperate Notre Dame is good enough reason to side with the Irish.
The Pick: Notre Dame wins, but Miami +7.5 is the pick.
#2 Georgia vs. #10 Ole Miss: The SEC battle is slated at a 56.5 point total which seems a tad high at first glance. Both teams have explosive offenses as far as points per game; they just get there a differently. Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss can extend plays, whereas QB Gunner Stockton and the Bulldogs offense wear foes down more often than not. Turnovers and red zone execution will play a huge part in victory. Ole Miss will be without star RB Kewan Lacy, who’s been banged up most of the year. The stat that stands out to this College Football podcaster is Georgia averaging 200 rushing yards versus Ole Miss giving up 149 rushing yards per contest.
The Pick: Georgia -3.5
#5 Alabama vs. #14 LSU: The Playoff committee really likes Alabama ranking the Tide at #5. LSU is looking for a high-level win and have their eyes set on a win in Death Valley. Alabama list of injured players is of major concern, although they should get some back this week. The Tigers defense is second in the NCAA for QB hits which will test the young Alabama QB Keelon Russell. For LSU QB Sam Leavitt will need to limit his mistakes. If Sam does that, the more versatile offense with a better defense, playing a home in a must win, equals the Tigers win. The spread, however, is the most difficult call here.
The Pick: LSU –6.5
#3 Utah vs #9 BYU: Huge Big-12 scrap flying under the radar mainly due to a bunch of name brand schools stealing the headlines this Saturday. Utah pulled away from a hungover Cincy club in week 9 and BYU defeated ASU after dropping their first game of the years to UCF in week 8. Listed as doubtful, Cougars RB LJ Martin could miss his 5th game in a row. The quarterback battle leans to Utah’s signal caller Devon Dampier. Don’t get me wrong, BYU QB Bear Bachmeier is solid, but Dampier is a better overall player. One thing to note, undefeated teams tend to lose in November.
The Pick: Utah wins BYU covers as a +4.5.
#21 Iowa wins as a minor +2.5 road dog at Northwestern.
#6 Kentucky vs #13 Tennessee: The Vols handled Alabama and somehow find themselves ranked 8 spots below. Kentucky is on a roll with their only loss to Bama and wins over LSU and South Carolina by the same scores 35-34. The Gamecocks are playing better now, having beaten Tennessee. The round robin effect in the SEC is fun to watch, and this one should be close. Can the Vols have a successful pass offense versus a Wildcats defense giving up 249 passing yards per outing?
The Pick: Kentucky +6.5
#7 Texas vs. #18 Missouri: The number of important playmakers for Texas on the injury report is troubling. The Tigers have been great a not turning the ball over. If Missouri is forced to pass, Texas has capable pass rushers to wreck shop. Both teams have two losses, so another loss could kick them out of playoff contention.
The Pick: Missouri –2.5
Texas State +6.5 versus Oregon State
West Virginia +17.5 versus #15 Texas Tech
