Week 1 of college football season is upon us, and we don’t waste any time with a packed Thursday schedule of games.
The renewal of The Backyard Brawl between West Virginia and Pittsburgh is the highlight of Week 1.
In last season’s championship, Pitt won the ACC Championship, but it must replace its first-round quarterback, Biletnikoff Award-winning wide receiver and offensive coordinator. The Panthers must get off to a fast start against West Virginia, where JT Daniels, the transfer quarterback, is reunited with OC Graham Harrell.
West Virginia is entering this season with some questions. It is expected to fare much worse than Pitt. This matchup is a good example of where Narduzzi has problems.
The Mountaineers have a talented but often injured quarterback in Daniels, who comes from Georgia via USC. I think that there are some positives. This game could be a barn burner if Daniels and Harrell catch lightning and get the passing game moving against a strong Pitt defense.

A high-octane offense and a spectacular season by Pitt in 2021 led to a remarkable season. They won the ACC Championship as well as the Peach Bowl. Coach Narduzzi seems to be returning to his roots and using physical defense and a ground game to defeat his opponents.
This is a concern for me. I don’t think Narduzzi will find the same success this season. He will be focusing on his running game and will run into the same problem he faced before last season with Kenny Pickett’s team. He struggled against teams he was expected to beat, as evidenced by his 12-18-2 ATS record as a home favorite. That record before Pickett’s big season may lend the biggest hand into betting on this game.
Betting the game
In the 105th Backyard Brawl, the Mountaineers and Panthers will be in action. Both teams are likely to be rusty and make errors as they introduce new offenses and quarterbacks against other defenses. Both offensive lines will be experienced and should be able to minimize mistakes. Because the Pitt defense is more cohesive than the Mountaineers’, the Panthers appear to be the better team in this game. The Panthers boast a strong defensive front and a veteran secondary who at least knows how they work together in real-game situations. JT Daniels from WVU and Kedon Slovis from Pitt will work with new receivers and coordinators. Both teams will experience growing pains, but I like the Mountaineers’ chances to keep the game close. Daniels’s impressive arm against the Panthers’ secondary and the Panthers’ shifting from a pass-first offense toward a balanced attack are two examples of the challenges that the Mountaineers face. Giving up a Touchdown in a rivalry game like this is always risky, so take the points.
Prediction: Take West Virginia and the points(+7.5)

For example, the odds as of a few days before the game are averaging to -110 if you are betting on the Mountaineers to cover.
