Ohio State vs. Texas Prediction and Game Preview

Top-ranked Ohio State travels to Austin for a primetime showdown against fourth-ranked Texas in one of the most important nonconference games of the 2026 college football season.

This is the third meeting between the programs in less than two years. Ohio State defeated Texas 28-14 in the College Football Playoff semifinal following the 2024 season before winning last year’s season opener 14-7 in Columbus.

Arch Manning struggled in that 2025 matchup, completing 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Texas did not score until the fourth quarter and failed to complete its comeback after reaching Ohio State territory during its final possession.

Both teams looked dominant in their 2026 openers.

Ohio State defeated Ball State 56-3 behind an outstanding performance from Julian Sayin. The Buckeyes quarterback threw for 320 yards and accounted for four touchdowns. Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns during the first half alone.

Texas opened with a 59-7 victory over Texas State. Manning passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns, while Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo combined for 190 receiving yards and three scores.

Ohio State’s Most Important Advantages

  • Recent history: Ohio State has defeated Texas twice since January 2025.
  • Elite receiver: Smith may be the most difficult individual matchup in college football.
  • Quarterback efficiency: Sayin looked comfortable and accurate in the season opener.
  • Defensive strength: Ohio State allowed Ball State only 165 total yards and no touchdowns.
  • Big-game experience: Ryan Day’s program has performed well in recent meetings with Texas.
  • National ranking: The Buckeyes enter Austin as the No. 1 team in the country.

Texas enters with considerable motivation after losing its previous two meetings with Ohio State. The Longhorns also have the advantage of playing this rematch in Austin after last season’s game was held in Columbus.

Manning looked far more comfortable against Texas State than he did against Ohio State last season. He attacked downfield, protected the football and distributed passes to an explosive receiving corps led by Coleman and Wingo.

Texas also forced three turnovers in its opener. Linebacker Rasheem Biles and defensive lineman Hero Kanu were among the defensive playmakers who helped the Longhorns overwhelm Texas State.

Texas’ Keys to Winning the Rematch

  • Protect Manning: Texas cannot allow Ohio State’s defensive front to control the game.
  • Establish the run: The Longhorns need offensive balance against an elite defense.
  • Contain Smith: Texas must prevent Ohio State’s star receiver from producing explosive touchdowns.
  • Win on early downs: Keeping Sayin in third-and-long situations would help the Texas pass rush.
  • Create turnovers: The Longhorns produced three takeaways in their season opener.
  • Finish drives: Texas scored only seven points against Ohio State last season despite creating late opportunities.

Prediction Market #1: Texas to Win Outright

Kalshi displayed Texas’ outright-winner contract at approximately 54¢, with traders assigning the Longhorns an implied probability near 52%. Polymarket also placed Texas slightly ahead, with its contract trading at approximately 53¢ when the markets were reviewed.

Because the lower purchase price is preferable when comparing contracts tied to the same outcome, Polymarket offered the more favorable displayed price for a Texas victory.

Ohio State has won the last two meetings, but this is a much different environment. The Buckeyes must face Manning and an explosive group of receivers in front of a hostile primetime crowd in Austin.

Texas also has a quarterback with a personal reason to deliver his best performance. Manning struggled in Columbus last season, but he now has another year of starting experience and enters the rematch after throwing four touchdowns in the opener.

Why Texas Should Win

  • Texas has the home-field advantage in a primetime atmosphere.
  • Manning is more experienced than he was in last season’s meeting.
  • Coleman and Wingo give Texas two dangerous receiving threats.
  • The Longhorns forced three turnovers in their opening victory.
  • Ohio State showed occasional tackling problems against Ball State.
  • Texas has spent an entire year preparing for another opportunity against the Buckeyes.
  • Prediction: Texas wins outright
  • More favorable displayed price: Polymarket at approximately 53¢

Prediction Market #2: Texas to Cover the 1.5-Point Spread

The point-spread market is nearly evenly divided. Both prediction market sites placed Texas’ probability of covering the 1.5-point spread close to 50%, with prices fluctuating as participants reacted to the teams’ dominant opening performances.

The difference between the available prices was minimal when the markets were reviewed. Participants should confirm the current price before purchasing because a close matchup can produce frequent market movement.

Ohio State has the best individual offensive player in Smith, and Sayin looked excellent against Ball State. However, the Buckeyes are stepping into a far more difficult situation against a Texas defense capable of creating pressure and forcing turnovers.

Texas should also have more offensive success than it did in Columbus last season. Manning’s improved experience, combined with Coleman and Wingo on the outside, gives Sarkisian several ways to challenge Ohio State’s secondary.

The 1.5-point spread essentially asks which team will win the game. If Texas takes advantage of its home field and defeats Ohio State, the Longhorns should have a strong opportunity to cover the short number.

Why Texas Can Cover the Spread

  • The Longhorns are playing at home under the lights.
  • Manning enters the game with confidence after throwing four touchdowns.
  • Texas has multiple explosive receivers capable of testing Ohio State’s secondary.
  • The Longhorns forced three turnovers against Texas State.
  • The 1.5-point spread requires only a narrow Texas victory.
  • Ohio State must play its first road game against a top-five opponent.
  • Texas has significant motivation after losing the last two meetings.
  • Prediction: Texas covers 1.5 points
  • More favorable displayed price: Kalshi at approximately 51¢

Players to Watch

  • Arch Manning, Texas: Manning gets an opportunity to redeem last season’s difficult performance in Columbus.
  • Julian Sayin, Ohio State: The Buckeyes quarterback threw for 320 yards and accounted for four touchdowns in the opener.
  • Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State: Smith produced 151 receiving yards and two touchdowns during the first half against Ball State.
  • Cam Coleman, Texas: The talented receiver gives Manning a dangerous downfield target.
  • Ryan Wingo, Texas: Wingo’s speed creates another major challenge for Ohio State’s secondary.
  • Rasheem Biles, Texas: The linebacker must help contain Ohio State’s speed and create negative plays.
  • Caleb Downs, Ohio State: The defensive leader will be critical against Manning and Texas’ explosive receivers.
  • Hero Kanu, Texas: His ability to generate interior pressure could disrupt Sayin’s timing.

The Verdict

  • Score Prediction: Texas 27, Ohio State 24
  • Outright-Winner Prediction: Texas
  • Point-Spread Prediction: Texas -1.5
  • More Favorable Outright-Winner Price: Polymarket
  • More Favorable Point-Spread Price: Kalshi
  • Most Important Matchup: Texas’ secondary against Jeremiah Smith
  • Biggest Unknown: Whether Texas can establish a consistent running game

Ohio State has already proven it can defeat Texas, and Smith is capable of taking over the game by himself. However, the location and quarterback development create a different challenge for the Buckeyes this time.

Manning should play considerably better than he did in Columbus last season, while Texas’ receiving corps and home-field advantage should create enough explosive opportunities. Expect a back-and-forth game that remains undecided until the fourth quarter, with Texas finally ending its two-game losing streak against Ohio State.

Prediction market trading involves financial risk and may not be appropriate for everyone. Contract prices can change before the game, and participants can lose the full amount used to purchase a contract.
