Although the first weekend of college football season 2022 lacks a big-time matchup, Nebraska versus Northwestern in Ireland Week 0 is sure to be a top pick in terms of intrigue. While Dublin is a great vacation spot, it is a business trip for both sides, with Big Ten play at stake. Don’t let the fact that it’s Week 0 fool you. Both teams are pressured to perform well in conference play to kick off the new year.
Northwestern is coming off a 3-9 year, but the general atmosphere surrounding the program is very different from what is happening in Lincoln. The Wildcats won the Big Ten West Division titles in 2018 and 20. After last year, both sides of the ball are in the spotlight. The defense at Northwestern has regressed, and the offense scored just 16.6 points per game. It takes marked improvement on the ball’s defensive and offensive sides to get back to the postseason. There is optimism with 12 returning starters.

Lincoln was in dire need of change after losing nine games by single figures last season. Frost put the reset button on and restructured his staff. He brought in a few new assistants, including Mark Whipple, an offensive play-caller. Frost also made a strong push to the transfer portal, landing top-quality players at quarterback (Casey Thompson), receiver(Trey Palmer) and along the defensive line (“Ochaun Mathis”). It is important to show improvement immediately since Frost’s buyout dropped to $7.5million on Oct. Another losing season and Frost may be shown the door.
It is not an easy task to start the season with a conference matchup. However, this matchup will provide a great window into how these teams have developed since ’21. This matchup is difficult to predict due to all of Nebraska’s changes and new faces. With a better line to protect Thompson’s offense, will the Cornhuskers be able to fire on all cylinders? Will the new attack take time to gel? Northwestern’s defense will be much better than last year in 2022. The defense has to be better than it was last year. However, the Wildcats must still find ways to move and control the ball. Although the run game will have some success, there are too many questions at quarterback.
