Clemson vs. LSU Prediction and Game Preview

The Lane Kiffin era at LSU begins under the lights in Tiger Stadium with a fascinating rematch against Clemson.

LSU defeated Clemson 17-10 in last season’s opener, using a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to Trey’Dez Green to break a 10-10 tie. Clemson struggled to finish drives and failed to score during the second half.

Both programs enter the rematch with different starting quarterbacks and significant roster changes.

LSU hired Kiffin after he led Ole Miss to an 11-1 regular season in 2025. His arrival was followed by an aggressive roster reconstruction built around former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. The dual-threat passer threw for 4,513 yards and 34 touchdowns during two seasons with the Sun Devils while leading Arizona State to the 2024 Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff.

Leavitt will operate behind an offensive line strengthened by former Colorado left tackle Jordan Seaton. Running back Harlem Berry and tight end Trey’Dez Green provide LSU with two dangerous weapons, while Kiffin’s offensive system should create more explosive plays than an attack that averaged only 22.8 points last season.

LSU’s Most Important Advantages

  • Experienced quarterback: Leavitt has already started 20 games at Arizona State.
  • Offensive system: Kiffin has a long record of building productive college offenses.
  • Home-field advantage: Clemson must face LSU at night in Tiger Stadium.
  • Offensive-line improvement: Seaton gives LSU an experienced protector at left tackle.
  • Versatile backfield: Berry gives LSU a potentially explosive rushing and receiving threat.
  • Red-zone target: Green creates matchup problems with his size and athleticism.

Clemson is attempting to recover from a disappointing 7-6 season. Dabo Swinney selected Christopher Vizzina to replace Cade Klubnik at quarterback. Vizzina has thrown only 105 career passes, but he produced 317 passing yards and three touchdowns in his only previous start against SMU.

The Clemson offense still possesses dangerous receivers in Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore. However, the biggest question is whether Clemson’s offensive line can protect Vizzina from LSU’s pass rush in one of college football’s loudest stadiums.

Clemson’s defense gives the visiting Tigers an opportunity to remain competitive. Linebacker Sammy Brown recorded 106 tackles last season, while defensive end Will Heldt produced 15.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Both players must disrupt Leavitt and prevent LSU from establishing its preferred tempo.

Clemson’s Keys to Remaining Competitive

  • Protect Vizzina: Clemson cannot allow LSU to control the game with its pass rush.
  • Avoid turnovers: Giving Kiffin’s offense short fields could quickly produce separation.
  • Create pressure: Brown and Heldt must make Leavitt uncomfortable in the pocket.
  • Establish the run: Clemson needs to prevent Vizzina from facing constant third-and-long situations.
  • Produce explosive passes: Wesco and Moore must create plays down the field.
  • Finish drives: Clemson cannot repeat last season’s second-half scoring problems.

Prediction Market #1: LSU to Win Outright

Polymarket displayed LSU’s outright-winner contract at approximately 76¢, representing an implied probability near 76%. Kalshi placed LSU’s probability at approximately 77%, with its “Yes” contract available near 78¢ when the market was reviewed.

Because a lower purchase price is preferable when comparing contracts tied to the same outcome, Polymarket offered the more favorable displayed price for an LSU victory.

Clemson’s defense is capable of keeping the score close, but LSU possesses significant advantages at quarterback and head coach. Leavitt has already succeeded in important Power Four games, while Vizzina will be making only his second career start.

LSU’s home-field advantage should also influence the outcome. Kiffin will make his debut in a Saturday-night atmosphere at Tiger Stadium, where Clemson’s inexperienced quarterback must manage crowd noise, defensive pressure and the expectations attached to a nationally televised opener.

Why LSU Should Win

  • LSU has the more experienced starting quarterback.
  • Kiffin’s offense should create favorable situations for Leavitt.
  • Clemson must break in a new quarterback on the road.
  • LSU has the stronger and deeper collection of offensive playmakers.
  • Tiger Stadium provides LSU with a significant environmental advantage.
  • LSU already demonstrated that it can win a physical game against Clemson.
  • Prediction: LSU wins outright
  • More favorable displayed price: Polymarket at approximately 76¢

Prediction Market #2: Clemson to Cover the 10-Point Spread

The point-spread market presents a more difficult decision. Polymarket priced Clemson +10.5 at approximately 55¢, while the LSU -10.5 contract was displayed near 53¢ when the market was reviewed.

The number available at the time of purchase matters because the difference between Clemson +10 and Clemson +10.5 could become important in a relatively low-scoring game. Participants should confirm the exact point spread and contract price before purchasing because both can change as trading activity continues.

LSU appears to be the more complete team, but Clemson’s defensive front should prevent the home team from immediately taking control. Brown and Heldt can pressure Leavitt, disrupt LSU’s running game and create difficult third-down situations.

Clemson also has enough talent at receiver to produce several explosive plays. Vizzina does not need to dominate for Clemson to remain within the spread. He must protect the football, connect with Wesco and Moore when opportunities appear, and allow the defense to keep the score manageable.

LSU should eventually pull away, but asking a rebuilt roster to win by double digits in Kiffin’s first game makes Clemson the stronger point-spread prediction.

Why Clemson Can Stay Within the Spread

  • Clemson allowed only 20.5 points per game last season.
  • Brown is one of the country’s most productive linebackers.
  • Heldt gives Clemson a proven pass-rushing threat.
  • Wesco and Moore can create explosive plays after the catch.
  • LSU must adjust to a new coaching staff and redesigned offense.
  • Clemson has already experienced playing against LSU’s physical defense.
  • The projected game total suggests a relatively limited number of possessions.
  • Prediction: Clemson covers 10 points
  • More favorable displayed price: Polymarket at approximately 55¢ for Clemson +10.5

Players to Watch

  • Sam Leavitt, LSU: The Arizona State transfer begins his LSU career as the centerpiece of Kiffin’s offense.
  • Christopher Vizzina, Clemson: The inexperienced starter faces an enormous challenge in Tiger Stadium.
  • Trey’Dez Green, LSU: The imposing tight end scored the deciding touchdown against Clemson last season.
  • Sammy Brown, Clemson: Clemson’s star linebacker must limit LSU’s running game and keep Leavitt contained.
  • Harlem Berry, LSU: The explosive running back could become a major weapon in Kiffin’s offense.
  • Jordan Seaton, LSU: The former Colorado tackle is responsible for protecting Leavitt’s blind side.
  • Bryant Wesco Jr., Clemson: Clemson needs its leading receiver to stretch LSU’s secondary.
  • Will Heldt, Clemson: His ability to pressure Leavitt could determine whether Clemson remains close.

The Verdict

  • Score Prediction: LSU 27, Clemson 20
  • Outright-Winner Prediction: LSU
  • Point-Spread Prediction: Clemson +10
  • More Favorable Outright-Winner Price: Polymarket
  • More Favorable Point-Spread Price: Polymarket
  • Most Important Matchup: Clemson’s pass rush against LSU’s offensive line
  • Biggest Unknown: Vizzina’s performance in his second career start

LSU has the better quarterback, the more explosive offensive system and one of college football’s most intimidating home-field advantages. Clemson’s defense, however, is too talented to dismiss. Brown and Heldt should create enough negative plays to keep the visitors within striking distance before LSU closes the game during the fourth quarter.

Prediction market trading involves financial risk and may not be appropriate for everyone. Contract prices can change before the game, and participants can lose the full amount used to purchase a contract.
