Bill Belichick Enters Year Two at North Carolina With the Hype Gone and the Hot Seat Warm

Publish Date: 06/22/2026
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
Bill Belichick North Carolina enters Year 2 under pressure after a 4-8 season. A tougher schedule will quickly reveal if progress is real.

Entering the 2026 college football season, Bill Belichick is no longer the biggest story in the sport. He is closer to a question mark. The six-time Super Bowl serial winner arrived in North Carolina in the winter of 2024 to enormous fanfare, the most decorated coach in NFL history, trying the college game for the first time. What followed was a 4-8 record, a 2-6 mark in the ACC, and the program’s worst season since 2018. All that hype didn’t survive the fall, and now the 74-year-old enters year two on the hot seat.

Nothing went according to plan

It is worth remembering how high the expectations were when the rumors first started flying around. Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi flipped the roster almost completely in their first offseason, bringing in 70 new players, including 42 from the transfer portal. The plan was to run the program like a pro franchise, and Lombardi had pitched it as essentially a 33rd NFL team, a line that got thrown back at North Carolina over and over as the losses piled up. The Tar Heels never built any cohesion, finished with one of the worst offenses in the country, and at one point, there was even talk that Belichick and the school might part ways midseason. While that never happened, the Heels’ year was every bit the disaster the record suggests. For a coach who spent more than 20 years as the standard in the NFL, it was a really humbling introduction to a sport that does not care about your resume.

He’s got his team this time around

That being said, Belichick believes this season will be different, and his reason is simple. “We have our team now,” he said this spring, pointing to the continuity the program lacked twelve months ago. There’s definitely something to that, since they didn’t gut the roster through the portal. They signed nearly 40 freshmen in December and added a few transfers, then got a full offseason together instead of meeting in August. So, whether a young roster counts as stability is a fair debate, really, but at least he is not starting over with 70 strangers.

The biggest unknown is at quarterback, where it is a full rebuild is in a massive swing. Last year’s starter, Gio Lopez, transferred to Wake Forest, leaving the job wide open. Wisconsin transfer Billy Edawards Jr., a former Maryland starter in his sixth year, came out of spring as the presumptive starter, with Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neil and freshman Travis Burgess also in it. New coordinator Bobby Petrino was hired to fix an offense that ranked 118th in scoring, and until the job settles, it is hard to know what this unit will look like.

The schedule offers no mercy

However this team comes together, the schedule will test it right off the bat. North Carolina opens against TCU in Dublin, the same program that beat Belichick 48-14 in his first college game, then plays Clemson on the road and Notre Dame at home in five weeks. The ACC slate adds road trips to Pittsburgh, Duke, and Virginia, two of which reached last year’s conference title game. Not everyone is convinced the Tar Heels are ready, either. ESPN’s Connelly called the debut a “mulligan” year and does not expect dramatic improvement, while CBS’s Cody Nagel predicted a finish at the bottom of the ACC.

More than likely, the truth sits between the hype of last spring and the gloom of this one. A 74-year-old NFL legend cannot instantly fix problems baked into the modern college game, from a roster turnover to NIL math to an unsettled quarterback room. A full offseason and a settled locker room should make North Carolina better than the team that limped to 4-8. Whether better means bowl eligible or simply less embarrassing is the question that decides Belichick’s future, and the answer to that, we will know at Dublin in late August.
