LSU is a 68% favorite on Polymarket to beat No. 5 Alabama Saturday, and the Tigers get to do it at home. Alabama vs LSU kicks off at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC in Baton Rouge, with LSU favored by 5.5 points on Tuesday’s Polymarket line and the total set at 52.5.
Both teams are 6-2, and the loser walks out of Tiger Stadium with a third loss and four weeks left to save its playoff case. Alabama sits fifth in the first College Football Playoff rankings, one spot ahead of Kentucky, and the Crimson Tide would host a first-round playoff game if the season ended today. LSU is 14th and needs this one far more.
āLess margin for error. We’ve got to be on everything. We have to make sure we perform really well against a really good team that’s coached really well,ā LSU coach Lane Kiffin said Monday.
The kickoff time became its own storyline, too. Kiffin pointed out that Alabama has not played a daytime game at Tiger Stadium since 2010, and Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about it at his weekly press conference.
āWell, I feel like weāre on the road, so, you know, I’d rather play at home if we want to have all these advantages,ā DeBoer said. āBut, with the earlier kick, is that what youāre asking? Yeah, I mean, I don’t get to choose that, I guess. So, I don’t have any choice in that. It is what it is. We just got to show up and play.ā
Alabama scored 49.6 points per game over its first five games behind redshirt freshman quarterback Keelon Russell. The two losses since then tell a different story. Georgia won in Tuscaloosa for its first regular-season win over Alabama since 2007, and Tennessee beat the Tide 26-10 in Knoxville a week later.
Against Georgia and Tennessee, Russell’s interception rate jumped from 1.9% to 3.4%, his sack rate nearly doubled from 7.4% to 13.2%, and his average per dropback fell from 9.7 yards to 4.8.
On paper, LSU is the worst possible opponent for that problem. The Tigers create more negative plays than any defense in the country, and LSU is the last elite defense left on Alabama’s regular-season schedule. Russell had a bye week to reset after throwing for 311 yards and three touchdowns against Texas A&M, and he will need every bit of that rest in one of the loudest stadiums in the sport.
Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU during the Rebelsā playoff run last season, and his first year in Baton Rouge hit a rough patch early. The Tigers lost 32-24 at Ole Miss and 35-34 in overtime at Kentucky, with the first loss coming in Oxford, where Kiffin coached for six seasons.
LSU then blew out Mississippi State and beat Auburn 38-17 behind 387 passing yards and three touchdown passes from quarterback Sam Leavitt.
LSU has scored at least 31 points in seven of its eight games. At the same time, the offense lacks the big plays that usually win games like this one. Leavitt averages 12.1 yards per completion, and running back Dilin Jones averages 4.4 yards per carry with very few long runs.
āYou see them, and they look like old Alabama teams,ā Kiffin said.
Alabama has won the last two meetings, 42-13 in Baton Rouge in 2024 and 20-9 in Tuscaloosa last season. Saturday will be Kiffinās first Alabama vs LSU game as the Tigersā coach, and he called plays for former Alabama coach Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa for three seasons before returning to the SEC as Ole Miss coach. Alabama also owns a 45-17 win over Kentucky, the team that handed LSU one of its losses.
The path after Saturday looks very different for each team. Alabama closes with Vanderbilt on the road and home games against Chattanooga and Auburn, so a win in Baton Rouge would leave the Tide in strong shape for an at-large spot. LSU still has Texas at home and road trips to Tennessee and Arkansas, which means a loss would almost certainly end its playoff hopes in Kiffin’s first year.
Alabama vs LSU is also one of four ranked SEC matchups this weekend, so the league’s playoff picture will look different by Sunday morning no matter who wins in Baton Rouge.
The last time Alabama played an afternoon game at Tiger Stadium, on Nov. 6, 2010, No. 12 LSU beat No. 5 Alabama 24-21.
