Alabama Is Rebuilding Its Defensive Front Through the Portal, and It Might Actually Work

Alabama defensive line enters 2026 with nine new additions. Can Kalen DeBoer’s portal rebuild help the Crimson Tide compete for a title?

Alabama finished last season in the college Football Playoff quarterfinals, falling in the Rose Bowl, and then watched its defensive front empty out almost overnight. Tim Keenan III and LT Overton ran out of eligibility and left for the NFL draft. Five more defensive linemen entered the transfer portal, with James Smith and Qua Russaw landing at Ohio State, and all three leading inside linebackers graduated on top of it. The back end of the defense returns nearly intact. The front of it had to be rebuilt almost entirely from scratch.

So Kalen DeBoer and general manager Courtney Morgan went and rebuilt it. Alabama signed four defensive linemen out of the portal and five more in the freshman class, part of a 16-man transfer haul that 247Sports ranked 16th in the country. The headliners are a pair of four-star tackles from the West Coast, Terrance Green from Oregon at 6 ft 5 and 330 pounds, and Devan Thompkins from USC at 6 ft 5 and 290, with South Carolina edge Desmond Umeozulu joining them. These additions are not projects; they are grown college players with real snaps behind them, and DeBoer spent the Senior Bowl in January calling the incoming group captain-type people.

The one returning star makes the whole plan make sense. Wolf linebacker Yhonzae Pierre led the team in sacks and tackles for loss last season and posted a team high 45 quarterback pressures, and the genuinely sobering part is that he and the departed Overton were the only Alabama defenders to clear 20. Everything starts with Pierre coming off the edge and the new bodies eating space in front of him, because a proven rusher buys time for everyone still learning next to him.

DeBoer watched the group through spring practice and liked what all the new size gives him. “A lot of potential to set the front, let them play ball,” he said, which is coach-speak for a defense that can rush four and win without manufacturing pressure, something Kane Wommack’s unit had to do too often last season

The skepticism writes itself, and some of it is fair, honestly. Last year’s line, the one with all the departed talent, was decent rather than dominant, finishing 28th nationally with 33 sacks while allowing almost 127 rushing yards a game. Now Alabama is asking a room full of strangers to be better than that in the toughest league in the sport, in their very first season playing together. Defensive line chemistry is usually the last thing a transfer class develops, because run fits and stunts depend on players trusting each other’s eyes.

The reason it might work out well is that DeBoer has done this before. The Washington team he took all the way to the national title game in 2023 was stitched together from the portal, and he has proven that he can turn a room of newcomers into a unit faster than most coaches in the sport. This class also skews older and bigger rather than young and hopeful, and grown man defensive tackles tend to translate quickly. Thompkins already has production to point to, with 18 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble at USC last season.

The answer will come fast either way. SEC offenses will test the new front within the first month of the season, and either it sets the line of scrimmage the way DeBoer is promising, or Wommack goes back to dialing up the chaos to hide it. For a program that measures every year against a championship, the entire 2026 defense comes down to how quickly nine new linemen learn to play like they grew up together.
