Yes, it’s been great recruiting, and the games are great fun. But 21-17 in three consecutive seasons is not exactly how it was supposed to go, considering all the hype surrounding last season.
It was lost in a hurry. North Carolina was 5-20 in a 25-game run before the guy took control. Check out the best bookmakers for betting on College Football!
That guy is Mack Brown.
With 265 wins and a Texas national championship, he’s in the College Football Hall of Fame. This is part of a remarkable streak of nine seasons with at least ten wins in the 2000s.
After leaving Texas in 2013, he took over North Carolina’s 2019 football team.
The offense placed tenth overall in the country. They scored 35 points per game and cranked up the balance and the pop. But it wasn’t enough.
The offense was good, and the defense was terrible. North Carolina was 0-7 against FBS opponents when they scored 34 points or less. Although this year’s team is less prolific on offense, the defense should be more solid, and the offense shouldn’t rely on one player.
It was all about Sam Howell. Sam Howell was the star, the next-level quarterback and the all-around player who managed the ground attack and the passing game. It’s difficult to dispute the results of the nation’s tenth-best offense, but this year’s version should spread the ball out more, rely on the backs a little, and keep the most of the pop.
Jacolby Criswell and Drake Maye will be fighting for the quarterback position. Conner Harrell is a freshman. Criswell is smaller and more athletic than Maye, who is 6-5 and can also run. They’ll both be attending fall camp to learn all about it.
Josh Downs an All-America target who can blow the top off of defenses. The top three receivers are back, but Downs needs to grab the ball 100 more times.
While the offensive line was able to generate enough yards to make the team a formidable force, it was also one of the worst in pass protection in the country.
However, there is a complete overhaul underway.
Ty Chandler, the leading rusher, is gone. Howell was the No. 2 rusher. With them, 24 out of 30 team touchdown runs have been lost. Senior British Brooks averaged more than nine yards per carry and had four touchdowns. He’ll now be the lead back in a rotation with junior DJ Jones. Let’s say that the defense should be a little better. Although it wasn’t the worst defense in the ACC, it did allow 418 yards and 32 points per game. Former Auburn national champion head coach and Texas defensive coordinator for a while under Mack Brown – Gene Chizik will attempt to change this.
The Tar Heels are talented on D. They have enough experience and prospects to improve. However, after allowing more than six yards per play since 2014, they have a lot of room for improvement.
Although the defensive backs made way too many plays, they can tackle – and many of them are back. Storm Duck and Tony Grimes have top talent at the corners. The safety tandem of Cam’Ron Kelly (and Giovanni Biggers) combined for 117 tackles last year – they were fourth and third in stops, respectively.
Power Echols had an outstanding freshman season. However, the secondary and linebacking corps should be fine. Safety Trey Morrison, safety, left the team for Oklahoma.
Can the Tar Heel front 3/4 be more disruptive and hold up better? Although it was not great against the run, it had two outstanding tackles in Myles Murphy (Ray Vohasek) to help. They are both 300-pounders and can reach the backfield.
Tomari Fox is currently not eligible for the season. There’s still a chance an NCAA ruling against him is reversed. However, UNC should be superb at defensive end with Noah Taylor from Virginia and Chris Collins.
Clemson is not on the schedule. That’s it. Now, move on to the big games against Notre Dame in Chapel Hill and NC State in Raleigh.
Yes, they must play both combatants from last year’s ACC Championship. But the date with Pitt comes after a week off, and Wake Forest isn’t a bad trip.
It’s dangerous to go to Virginia and Miami, and there are four ACC games in five dates. However, there isn’t a game North Carolina shouldn’t be able to win.
There will be some mishaps. But the schedule isn’t going to get any more favorable.
