After losing to Georgia 34-11 at the Orange Bowl, the line was that this was just the beginning. Check out the Best Bookmakers for betting on College Football!
At Michigan, beating Ohio State, winning Big Ten Championships, and making it to the College Football Playoff were all expected. For a long time, however, this seemed impossible.
If the roof had not collapsed against Michigan State, the 2015 team would have at least made it to the final weekend. The 2018 team was there until Ohio State put 62 on the board. The 2016 team was also in the mix until Ohio State beat them on the road.
Was 2021 the start of Michigan staying at or near the top of the Big Ten? While Michigan might have demonstrated its capabilities last year, it also showed that it does not yet have to be among the Alabamas, other SEC superstars, and the Ohio States as an annual threat.
Yes, they had a great, no-panic team, a tough defense, a strong attitude for the ground, and an even keel.
With all of the elements of being Michigan combined with the reality that Harbaugh would still be in the NFL if the 49ers didn’t move to low-ball cheap for its head coach, Harbaugh is more interested in a refresh than a launching point.
That’s all right, for now.
Harbaugh is under tremendous pressure, so Harbaugh has a bit of a break for the first time since his era. He showed he could beat Ohio State, and he showed he could take Michigan to the top-tier – it is possible.
It’s now his turn to build another team with new coordinators and a bunch of new parts and let Ohio State continue through the relentless weight loss and 24/7 obsession of living with the stain of losing to That Team Up North.
The Wolverine fanbase wants to win every season – Harbaugh better beat Michigan State this year – but for this season, the program can enjoy a little bit.
Michigan is in a good place. It’s going to be good, the monkeys are off all the backs for the time being, and the schedule works out well to gear back up for a relatively-speaking-compared-to-the-other-powers under-the-radar good season.
Also, you can do whatever. Repeat it. You’re Michigan.
The Michigan offense was more steady than it was spectacular. It led the Big Ten’s rushing attack, had the least sacks allowed and allowed the nation to have the fewest tackles for loss per game. It averaged 443 yards per game and didn’t make too many mistakes. The offense was steady, but the passing game needs to be better to win the Big Ten consistently.
It is now necessary to continue the process with a new offensive coordinator.
They aren’t in as dire a position as the defensive side is, but they still have a lot of work to do. Matt Weiss worked last year with the quarterbacks and for several years with the Baltimore Ravens. Sherrone Moore was the tight end’s coach the previous few seasons.
The coaching staff is playing the quarterback position like it should for the modern age. Technically, the job is still open for fall camp. However, the transfer portal wolves know that once Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy start to battle that McCarthy will end up being the starter. McCarthy has the more significant upside, but he could not compete this spring due to a shoulder injury. McNamara is the reliable option. Add in Davis Warren and ex-Texas Tech starter Alan Bowman for some backup. They can all play. There is no bad call.
Ronnie Bell, WR – who missed most of last year due to a knee injury β is expected to be back with Cornelius Johnson, the leading receiver, and Erick All, the excellent pass catcher. Add to that the return of Andrew Anthony and all the good parts, and you have a formidable group of receivers. Check out the top new sportsbooks for betting on college football!
With a bit of time, the offensive line should be fine. Olusegun Oluwatimi, a Virginian guard, has been added to the center of the line. Ryan Hayes, left tackle and All-Big Ten guard Zak Zinter are back.
Blake Corum has returned after running for 952 yards with 11 scores. Donovan Edwards, who finished third on the team with three scores and 174 yards, will be his leading man.
While it’s not as if the Vanderbilt defense lit the world on fire,…defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter will be taking over the same job with the Wolverines. He is a rising star who coached for years with the Baltimore Ravens and now has to rebuild the defense that allowed only 330 yards per game.
The overall pass rush was okay, even with David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson. They were brilliant, with 25 of the 34 sacks they had contributed to the team. It will be a constant work in progress to replace their lost production. We’ll start with Taylor Upshaw, the most successful returning sacker last year with 2.5.
Interior life is more manageable. Combining 326-pound Mazi Smith, the all-star Mazi and Kris Jenkins, a 275-pound junior Kris Jenkins should make for a solid combination.
Many of the top tacklers have left, but Junior Colson will be in the middle at the one-linebacker job. Nikhai Hill Green will take over the outside after a 50-stop year. He finished fourth on the team with 61 stops.
Although the secondary may be missing large parts, it will still be fine. There are many options for you to start with DJ Turner (all-Big Ten caliber) and RJ Moten (veteran safety).
Michigan State Oct. 29The Ohio State game is more important than any other year. But,…
Jim Harbaugh is currently 0-2 against Mel Tucker and 3-4 against Michigan State.
You have a week to prepare for the date. It’s at home with a Columbus road game to close it out. Iowa is also on the schedule.
Assume an Ohio State loss and then assume another loss somewhere, either at Iowa, at home against Penn State or – shudder! – against Michigan State.
Can Michigan win all of the games in which it will be favored?
Wisconsin is not on the table, Purdue and Minnesota are missing, and the non-conference slate (Colorado State, Hawaii, UConn) is soft and squishy. Maryland is dangerous, Nebraska will be more successful, and…
With only four away games, there is no reason to miss out on ten wins.
It would be too much to expect a repeat of 2021, but Michigan should still be entering the Ohio State game at 10-1, with at least a chance to win the Big Ten Championship.
