College Football Recruiting Roundup: Top Five 2017 Quarterbacks

#5 Dylan McCaffrey

Size: 6-5, 205

High School: Valor Christian, CO

Committed to: Michigan

What stands out: Height, release, athleticism, football IQ,  bloodlines.

What needs development: Velocity, mechanics, consistent accuracy in tight windows.

What happens next: Like his famous older brother, Dylan doesn’t face elite competition week-in week-out in CO.  That’s not a knock against him at all it’s simply a fact the state doesn’t typically put out many elite D1 prospects.  Will he silence the critics of CO recruits much the same as Christian has in Palo Alto?  Only time will tell but no one’s getting rich betting against Team McCaffrey.  He’ll compete with elite signal callers to get on the field for Big Blue each and every year but once he fills out look for him to make a push to become a Big Ten star.  Bonus: Look out for fellow McQB and youngest brother Luke, a 2019 recruit to potentially be the best of the entire bunch.
#4 Shawn Robinson

Size: 6-1.5, 215

High school: DeSoto, TX

Committed: TCU

What stands out: Arm strength, escapability, creativity, lower-body power, deep accuracy, instincts

What needs development: Release, pocket presence

What happens next: Has the potential to pass Andy Dalton as the top all-time player at the position in program history. Fearless leader plays in a tough league known for big-time talent. Has all the tools to contribute very early, be it as the guy or in a special package scenario.

#3 Hunter Johnson

Size: 6-3, 195

High school: Brownsburg, IN

Committed to: Clemson

What stands out: Footwork, frame, arm strength, polish, pocket presence

What needs development: Bulk, mobility

What happens next: Has “it” – looks like a college QB already. Very smooth.  Not playing against super elite competition but has passed all tests on all the right circuits. Hunter has everything but the size to take an ACC pounding right now. That will come in time, and with it, another title run for Dabo.

#2 Davis Mills

Size: 6-4, 200

High school: Greater Atlanta Christian, GA

Committed: Stanford

What stands out: Accuracy, football IQ, release

What needs development: Mobility, strength, bulk, escape speed.

What happens next: Redshirt. Wait. Learn. Listen. Develop. He’s a good one and battle-tested in a tough state but will face tremendous competition to get on the field and a waiting game no matter what given the complex offense.  If he develops to plan offers a ton of upside as a fully-functional QB in the right system.  Great fit and even better young man.

#1 Tate Martell

Size: 5-9, 200

High school: Bishop Gorman, Las Vegas, NV

Committed: A&M

What stands out: Quick release, mechanics, footwork, arm strength, mobility, instincts, leadership, awareness

What needs development: Bulk

What happens next: The top talent in this QB class and it’s not even close. He’s incredibly polished for a player of his age and if he can handle the pounding in the SEC, think Russell Wilson, Ricky Town & a more disciplined Manziel all wrapped into an all-time phenomenal competitor.  Tremendous get for Coach Sumlin if he can hang on til Signing Day.
