On paper, this looks like a mismatch, and the Lions won two of these teams three games against each other. Week 20 though saw the Stampeders break-through and beat the Lions. So a game that looks like a mismatch on paper could always surprise you in the end and the Stamps are capable of pulling off that upset.
While losing to Calgary two weeks ago, B.C. made the strategic decision to pull Adams in the third quarter, following a dismal showing resulting in only 116 yards passing without a touchdown and one interception from him – an unexpected turn of events given his regular season performance of leading in passing yards with 4,769 and second in touchdowns with 31 (career high). Dane Evans replaced Adams by throwing for 125 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions before being penalized ten times and forfeiting 117 yards to reduce his impact further on this game.
B.C. must prioritize run defense this Saturday against Calgary; their three opponents have all run for over 100 yards since Week 3, averaging an average of 147. One encouraging sign on defense has been Mathieu Betts leading the CFL regular season sack count with 18 and notching two against Calgary during his stellar rookie campaign – both record-setting accomplishments for any Canadian.
Calgary went to the end of the season to secure a playoff bid, but their Week 20 win against B.C. sealed their playoff destiny for an 18th consecutive season. Jake Maier didn’t need to do much, completing 10 of 21 pass attempts for 123 yards and two TDs. In comparison, Calgary’s run game made up 213 yards on 31 attempts – Peyton Logan ran for 105 yards and a touchdown while Tommy Stevens scored two scores – Ka’Deem Carey added another 88-yard effort!
Maier will likely need to improve his performance for the Stamps to defeat B.C. for a second time this season; Maier had only 420 total yards in three games against them this season and never went beyond 166 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception by contrast, Vernon Adams Jr of B.C threw for at least 300 yards twice out of three against them with six touchdowns and three interceptions during each game!
This will be a tight, hard-fought game for three quarters, and then the Lions will pull away at the end. BC 31Β Calgary 20!
