Gervonta Davis easily beat Ryan Garcia last Saturday night, where does he rank pound for pound? Today we will take a look at just that.
Why is Fury not fighting Usyk? It’s the only fight to be made in the division, but yet Fury is reluctant to take the fight. He made numerous demands, and Usyk accepted, and he still refused to fight.
Stevenson, 25, made a strong start toward becoming a three-division world champion by defeating Yoshino unbeaten in their 135-pound debut fight. Stevenson has displayed strong defense and showed an ability to stay in the pocket, as evidenced by landing 50% of punches against Yoshino via CompuBox, including 104 power shots. Now Stevenson will look to target either Lomachenko or Haney, whoever wins their May clash.
Davis destroyed a supposed King named Ryan Garcia with a devastating body punch. Now the question is will Davis step up his competition? He may be top five in the world, but his resume is not as good as those above him. Tank will be a handful for anyone to beat at this moment.
Haney, 24, earned a place on the rankings with two straight decisive victories against former titleholder George Kambosos in Australia. Haney utilized his smooth jab and powerful right hands to overwhelm Kambosos for another win that closed a successful two-year run that featured victories over Jorge Linares, Joseph Diaz Jr. and Kambosos – Can he beat Lomachenko in a long-anticipated showdown scheduled for May 20.
Canelo has one of the best resumes but is fighting John Ryder next. Give me a break! Ryder doesn’t belong in the same ring as Canelo. Still, Canelo is one of the best in the world, but he would be better off not fighting Bivol again. It’s hard when ranking Canelo to get the Bivol fight out of your mind. Bivol dominated Canelo and likely will again, if the rematch happens.
Spence, 33, continued his assault on the top names in the welterweight division last April with a victory against Yordenis Ugas that secured him three pieces of the 147-pound title. Despite suffering injuries in 2019 (car crash), 2021 (eye injury that forced him out of a scheduled fight with Manny Pacquiao), and in December (collision that left minor bumps and bruises), Spence continues the dominance of his weight class by dominating opponents one after the next. After a lengthy layoff, talks resumed between Spence and Crawford to secure an undisputed championship fight and possibly crown pound-for-pound No 1.
Bivol, 32, showed why he was 2022’s Fighter of the Year by outmuscling Ramirez with an impressive performance against him on March 18. Last May, he outmuscled the smaller Canelo Alvarez using his jab and combinations. Now Bivol won’t make any decisions until it is known what Alvarez’s plans for September are.
Crawford broke a 13-month hiatus by successfully defending his 147-pound title with an emphatic sixth-round knockout over Avanesyan in December, marking his 10th straight stoppage win and cementing him back into boxing’s pound-for-pound rankings. Now it seems likely that Crawford and Errol Spence Jr will meet, with hopes among all involved that an agreement may be struck by summer’s end. I am just kidding, as these two may never meet and that’s a shame.
At 118 pounds, Inoue established himself as one of the top fighters worldwide after dominating Paul Butler with a decisive knockout win and becoming boxing’s fourth current undisputed champion. Shortly thereafter, he signed a fight agreement against Stephen Fulton for their respective undisputed crowns. However, an injury will delay that bout until summer time – should Inoue win, it would further cement his standing and could potentially vault him further up the rankings–perhaps all the way to No. 1.
Usyk has earned victories against Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis and Tony Bellew at cruiserweight and two against Anthony Joshua at heavyweight. Since entering boxing’s most illustrious division, Usyk has found his niche. At 221 pounds he’s proved tricky to beat; negotiations between himself and Tyson Fury had become close to completion (despite an extended negotiation over a rematch clause); these negotiations eventually broke down, thus leaving Usyk with his mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois being likely. For some reason Fury wants no part of Usyk.
