Canelo Alvarez was beaten soundly by Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol just a few weeks ago, and after the fight, Canelo stated he wanted a rematch. The first two fights between Canelo and GGG were highly controversial, and the first fight was a robbery given to Canelo. It seems time away has led Canelo to rethink what he wants to do, and on Tuesday, Canelo announced that a third fight with GGG will be coming in September instead of the Bivol rematch. Canelo made GGG wait a couple of years longer than he had to as Canelo chose to fight the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s of the world instead of Golovkin. Golovkin was on the downside of his career when he handily beat Canelo in the first fight; of course, he was robbed, and a delay marred the ensuing rematch after Canelo tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The delayed fight was a war that could have gone either way, and Canelo got the close win. Both contests did PPV numbers over one million buys, and with the closeness of the first two fights and the PPV numbers, you would have expected the third fight between these two to happen soon after the second fight. That did not happen, as Canelo was not interested in running the battle back with Golovkin.
Canelo’s opinion of a third fight has changed since Golovkin is now 40 years old and has not looked great as of late. Canelo’s plan of beating Bivol and then fighting Golovkin failed as the bigger and more skilled Bivol dominated him. We all knew an immediate rematch with Bivol would not happen because Canelo is not stupid and he knows beating Bivol is a long shot at best, and a second decisive loss could put a massive dent in Canelo’s career. Fighting an eroded Golovkin seems like a safe bet at this point. Even though Golovkin is now 40 years old, he has never been on the canvas, and if Canelo could knock out Golovkin, his fans would act like the Bivol loss never happened.
Golovkin, in his last fight, started very slow, but as the fight went on, he looked ok but nowhere near what he used to be. This fight will be at 168 pounds which is a significant weight for a 40-year-old man who has fought his entire career at 160 pounds. The cards are stacked against Golovkin as the fight will be in Las Vegas, which means a knockout is the only way to beat Canelo in this fight. If you thought it was hard to get a decision before in Vegas against Canelo, try getting it with Canelo coming off a loss. Check out the top new sportsbooks!
Canelo will win this fight as everything is stacked in his favor, but it will not be easy as Golovkin is a proud warrior who will go out on his shield. The saddest part of all of this is that Golovkin will show three losses to Canelo, and the general public will believe that Canelo was a greater fighter when all is said and done, and that will not be the case! Golovkin, in his prime, would have easily beaten Canelo; hell, he easily beat Canelo in their first fight when he was already 35 and slowing down!
I look for Canelo to win the third fight, but Golovkin will put him through a little more hell before Canelo gets the much-needed victory to get his career on track. In the end, the one thing we do know is that Canelo will go out on his shield like the warrior he has always been.
