Australian lightweight boxing world champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. and American WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney are going to face off for the title of undisputed lightweight champion. Marvel Stadium in Melbourne is scheduled to host the fight on June 4 (or June 5 local time in Australia). Check out the best bookmakers for betting on the fight!
At the age of 19, Kambosos made his professional debut in 2013. He defeated Mickey Bey in the 2019 WBA-PABA and Lee Selby WBA Oceania in 2020. The 28-year-old boxer also faced Teofimo Lopez in November 2021 for the WBA, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles following multiple postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic and contract disputes. Kambosos dominated the young champion, winning by a split decision.
Since Pernell Whittaker in 1991, this is the first undisputed lightweight championship fight. Kambosos is the home favorite. In Haney’s case, quite a bit of adversity is ahead.
Having won seven National titles, Haney turned pro at the age of 17. Haney, who started his career in Mexico, was crowned WBC lightweight champion in 2017. In 2019, Haney defeated Antonio Moran for the WBC interim lightweight title. After being promoted to champion, Haney has successfully defended the belt four times.
Haney has a reputation for being a defensive wizard as he has been working with Floyd Mayweather. Haney’s jabs have made him a true force in the ring. Based on PunchStat, Haney hit 79 jabs out of 215 total punches against Jorge Linares.
Haney has more methodical approaches to boxing. In a recent interview with IFL TV, he spoke about Kambosos’ incapability of handling what he has on his sleeves.
“I got so many different styles, it depends what style I bring out on the night,” he said, via DAZN. “But obviously my style is number one, my ring IQ. It will be something totally different to what he’s used to. … He had speed. It’s more about timing with me. You can be the fastest fighter in the world but if you’re swinging at air, then what does it matter?”
Kambosos asserted that Haney isn’t ready for his power. Early on, Haney was struggling against Joseph Diaz, even for a brief moment. He claimed that he can exploit Haney’s errors early on.
“I believe he will run. He’ll run for his life when he feels the power,” Kambosos told Fight Hype, via Boxing News 24. “In his mind, he might think they’re great, but we’ve seen him hurt before. He’s been wobbled, been rocked, and these guys are way out of their prime or featherweights.”
Kambosos is the +140 underdog while Haney is the -170 favorite per DraftKings.
Haney is the -180 favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook, meaning bettors profit $100 from a bet of $180. Kambosos is the underdog by +140, so a $100 bet results in a profit of $140. If the wager amounts to $140, the profit is $196.
