Canelo Alvarez has a decision to make. Go back to 168 and defend his title against Gennady Golovkin or fight Dmitry Bivol in a rematch for Bivol’s Light Heavyweight Championship. A rematch against Bivol at 175lbs seems a bridge too far based on their previous match, and GGG would offer Canelo a chance to get back on track. Find the best sports betting site to bet on Boxing.
Eddie Hearn has said that he feels that would be the best career move for Canelo Alvarez, but it will be up to the Mexican superstar to decide if he wants to follow through with it.
Bivol, after his first fight with Canelo, said he would be willing to go down to 168 to fight the rematch, but recently Bivol had a change of heart and said he did not think he would be able to make that weight limit comfortably. So the options seem to be a rematch at 175 with Bivol or finishing the trilogy with Golovkin? Another decisive loss to Bivol would hurt Canelo’s marketability. You know Eddie Hearn wants nothing to do with risking that as Canelo is the most profitable fighter in the sports right now.
Let’s face it, I am sure Canelo would want the rematch, but even he knows how tough of a mountain Bivol would be for him to climb.
Eddie Hearn had this to say on the matter “If I was advising him, or if he actually listened to what I thought โ he would ask me my opinion. As I had said, we don’t make the decision โ I would probably go Triple G-[Canelo Alvarez in the fall],” Hearn said on The DAZN Boxing Show.
Hearn has stated in another interview that he believes Alvarez’s loss actually makes his fight with Golovkin “bigger.” The two rivals drew in their first meeting at middleweight in 2017. Alvarez won the second one by majority decision in 2018. Check out the best new sportsbooks for betting on Boxing!
Options for Bivol consist of fighting against the winner of the light heavyweight contest of British contenders Joshua Buatsi and Craig Richards or Callum Smith or Gilberto Ramirez. Bivol has already beaten Richards, but most expect Joshua Buatsi to win the fight against Richards. The biggest matchup for Bivol at the minute would be a unification fight with the winner of the Beterbiev/Smith fight coming up later this year.
Either way, Canelo goes will work out for him as Bivol and GGG would give him another high-Profile money-making fight.
