Earlier in the week, boxing fans were told that Canelo Alvarez would be fighting Jermall Charlo, but things have changed as he will be fighting Jermell and not Jermall. This is a huge difference as Jermell fights at 154 pounds and will fight the supposed Mexican warrior at 168 pounds.
At the same time, David Benavidez, who is a real threat, sits and waits.
Due to lingering personal issues and two years of inactivity, Jermall Charlo could not take up Canelo Alvarez’s lucrative fight in September, opening up an opportunity for Jermell Charlo (his smaller twin brother) to step in and accept this lucrative bout at 168lbs. Chris Mannix reports that Jermall’s team decided not to fight Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) in September as planned. Possible explanations as to why Jermall felt comfortable declining a Canelo fight on September 30th: will only one exists to me, and that’s the fact that the older Charlo for the most part has always been all talk. Plus maybe Little Charlo gets his ass kicked and the older brother gets the second fight in Canelo’s three-fight deal. The latter seems obvious to me, and if it’s true, it means David Benavidez will be waiting for a while.
Canelo’s other two options were Dmitry Bivol, who already dominated the Red one or Bado Jack, but Jack refused to defend his Cruiserweight title below the Cruiserweight limit. So Canelo, as he is want to do settled on an even softer touch in the 154lb younger Charlo brother; what a Mexican warrior Canelo is, NOT!!!
Canelo would be at a disadvantage against Benavidez because he throws a lot of punches, and Canelo would have to find a way to cut down the high output from the younger, stronger opponent.
Canelo is not a fighter looking to define his legacy; he is a fighter looking for soft touches to line his pockets with.
He did make GGG wait a couple extra years to fight him, and don’t forget after he barely survived those two battles, he decided to wait until GGG started receiving AARP membership letters before fighting him a third time. GGG Clearly won the first fight and I thought he edged Canelo in the rematch.
Canelos last opponent was John Ryder, who is a tough man, but he is not skilled enough to beat Canelo and if you look at the history of Canelo, that is what he is looking for.
He fought Sergey Kovalev after Andre Ward had ruined him, he defended his title against Avril Yildrim; who the hell is that? Don’t forget that classic fight against Rocky Fielding, either.
In truth, he should have been fighting Jermall a few years ago and Andrade instead of fighting soft touches. But Canelo continues to play it safe.
In Canelos defense Jermell may be the tougher fight at this moment since his older brother hasn’t fought in a couple of years, but both are easy targets for Canelo, so they fit perfectly into the plans.
If you look back at many Canelo fights, he has gotten tons of questionable scoring by judges in his favor and on top of that, his fights sometimes don’t even feel like real fights. The one that sticks in my mind would be the win over Kovalev that seemed staged to me.
Hell, Bivol won ten out of twelve rounds against Canelo, but the judges, for the most part, scored it like a close fight.
That could be as easy as he wants the money. But maybe it’s more than that?
Tim Tszyu’s long-awaited world title unification fight with undisputed champion Jermell Charlo has been officially postponed, dealing a devastating blow to the Australian boxing superstar.
This headline could easily read Canelo Ducks, Benavidez. Charlo ducks Tszyu!
Charlo faces a much bigger risk fighting the rising star Tszyu and Canelo’s biggest risk in his own division is Benavidez, maybe this fight is made to mitigate both fighters risk? If Charlo losses to Canelo, it will be sold that he was taking a shot at greatness, and for PBC they will act like this will be a historic accomplishment for the Mexican hero. When the truth is with a new three-fight deal the PBC can’t risk Canelo losing in the first fight of that contract.
This makes it a win-win situation for Canelo and Charlo and a lose-lose situation for Benavidez, Tszyu and the fans. Of course, fans are no longer worried about these days and the landscape of boxing is making that painfully clear.
I really think that Charlo would lose to Tszyu and this newest development shows me that the PBC thinks that is a possibility also.
The face of boxing has turned into the Mexican Mayweather as late and by the time he fights Benavidez, it just may be the end of Canelos’s career. Canelo is nothing but a Con man at this stage of his career.
